In my Bible reading this morning I was reminded of a wonderful truth… Although we can’t tell God what to (He is sovereign)… He is also “providential” (“Sovereignty + Love = Providence! … Bartel’s equation) Consequently, He invites us to appeal to His sovereignty through prayer in Jesus’ name! (Think about that!!!)
The Psalmist apparently depended on that truth as he penned the inspired words of Psalm 17! Here is a taste of what He said…
“Oh Lord, hear my plea… Listen to my cry… Pay attention to my prayer! It comes from honest lips! You have tested my thoughts and examined my heart… You have scrutinized me and found nothing wrong. I am determined not to sin in what I say! I have followed Your commands! … My steps have stayed on Your path; I have not wavered from following You!
“I am praying to You because I know you will answer, O God! Bend down and listen as I pray! Show me Your unfailing love in wonderful ways! … Guard me as you would guard your own eyes. Hide me in the shadow of Your wings. Protect me from wicked people… Arise, O Lord! Rescue me!” (This is what I underlined in my Bible from Psalm 17 NLT)
My advice… Pray! He is a loving Heavenly Father… He has invited you to come into His presence in Jesus’ name and appeal to his sovereignty! Here is how the Bible puts it in another place: “Let us come boldly [NOT arrogantly!] to the throne of our gracious God! There we will receive mercy, and will find grace to help us in our time of need!” (Hebrews 4:16)
