Idol’s are a hassle! First you have to make them… they are dead, inanimate things… then you have to carry them and move them… then they’re such demanding things – depending on the religion, you have to feed them (but they never really eat what you give them) and you have to appease them. They are a burden to be borne! And even if you don’t make what would be called an image or idol, but instead construct or identify something in your life that you “worship” (money, possessions, something pleasurable, etc.) the same problems exist! They end up taking, not giving; they’re costly, they’re demanding, and you end up in bondage to something that has no power of its own to help you – you end up carrying it!
The Living God is not like that! He “carries” those who embrace Him, have faith in Him, and reverence Him! What a contrast! I read about it this morning during “coffee with the Lord…
Here’s what the Lord said to His people:
“Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, WHO HAVE BEEN BORNE BY ME from before your birth, CARRIED from the womb! Even to your old age I am He, and to gray hairs I WILL CARRY YOU! I have made, AND I WILL BEAR; I WILL CARRY AND I WILL SAVE!
“To whom will you liken me and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be alike? … The goldsmith makes a god; then falls down to worship it. They lift in to their shoulder, THEY CARRY IT, they sit it in its place, and it stands there. It cannot move! If one cries to it, it does not answer or save him from his trouble!
“Remember this and stand firm! … I am God, and there is no other! I am God, and there is none like me! … My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish my purpose! … I have spoken and I will bring it to pass; I have purposed and I will do it!” (From Isaiah 46)
Idols… whatever they may be… There is no comparison between them and the Living God! He is alive! He conquered death! The Living God carries His people! He hears their prayers! Abandon any and all “idols!” Trust the Lord instead! Remember His commandment? “You shall have no other gods before [or besides} Me!” (Exodus 20:3)
