Facing a terrible situation? Try crying out to God for help! Psalm 124

Crying out to God

Have you ever been in a situation so bad it seemed there was no hope? Your circumstances were like flood waters – destruction seemed imminent. What you were facing seemed predictive of destruction. Your adversaries were out to get you? You felt like your enemies were trying to “do you in”… and with delight!

And then you cried out to God in desperation and he delivered you!

There’s a Psalm about that! Psalm 124 I read it this morning during “coffee with the Lord!” It’s labeled as “a song of ascents, of David” – In other words King David probably sang it or composed it on his way up to the temple to worship during one of his darkest days as a leader…

A SONG OF ASCENTS. OF DAVID. “If it had not been the LORD who was on our side — let Israel now say — if it had not been that the LORD who was on our side when people rose up against us, then they would have swallowed us up alive, when their anger was kindled against us! Then the flood would have swept us away, the torrent would have gone over us; then over us would have gone the raging waters! Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as prey to their teeth! We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowlers; the snare is broken, and we have escaped! OUR HELP IS IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, WHO MADE HEAVEN AND EARTH!!!” (Psalm 124 ESV)

Why not try it? Why not cry out to God and ask for His help! Why not put your situation in His hands! The Creator of heaven and earth is able to help you, guide you, and deliver you… Down the road a little ways you may be the one singing “If it had not been the Lord was on my side… My help is in the name of the Lord!”
