Are you a “seeker” – Check’n out Jesus? It’s time to go “all in!”

All inYou’ve been searching. You’d admit your heart longs for more – you want deep satisfaction! You’ve been check’n out Jesus. You know some people you respect – that impress you – that are “born again Christians.” You’ve been weighing becoming a Jesus-follower. But perhaps you’re afraid of the commitment – deep within you know it’s not something that you can simply “dabble in.” The Christians you know that exhibit fulfillment and satisfaction in their journey are “all-in!” I guess you could be called a “seeker.”

There was a guy like that in the Bible… I read his story this morning in the Bible. Ever hear of him? Name was Zacchaeus. Rich guy – but he was looking for more – knew the “toys” and the “investment portfolio” didn’t satisfy! Got his money at the expense of relationships and integrity – he was a hated tax collector. He heard about Jesus and wanted to meet him. The news spread that he was coming to town so Zacchaeus slipped over to the rally. The crowd was huge (and Zacchaeus was short)… found a tree, tried to be inconspicuous, and slipped up into a crook in the branches. And sure enough, here came His entourage… there He was – Jesus the guy he’d been hearing about!

Zacchaeus must have thought, “I’d sure like to have a talk with Him after all I heard about Him!” And almost as if Jesus read his thoughts, He suddenly stopped right beside the tree Zacchaeus had been hiding in, looked up right where he was, and called his name; “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.” I mean, Jesus even knew his name… knew where he was… and had read his thoughts!

That afternoon at the home of Zacchaeus was incredible! What an experience – Jesus answered all his questions – one right after another. Zacchaeus was ready to “go all in!” He stood up among his friends and exclaimed, “Look, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold!” (THAT, my friends, is repentance!”) Jesus’ response? “Today salvation has come to this house! … For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.”

(Look it up… It’s in your Bible – Luke 19:1-9)

Hey if you’re looking for something “more”… If you’ve discovered that the “toys, trinkets, and stash” don’t satisfy… Jesus knows your name… He’s aware of the cry of your heart… He knows the “tree you’re hiding in”… and He’s ready to “come to your house!” Listen, “Seekers need Saviors!” “He has come to seek and save the Lost!” Hope you’re ready to go “all in!” (I did and have never regretted it!)

The heart of a Spiritual “parent” and “care-giver”

Good parents are deeply concerned about the welfare of their children! A whimper from a new infant will bring a mother out of a deep sleep and to the child’s side. Conscientious parents want to know the whereabouts of their small children at all times. A scrape or a fall will provoke the tenderest of care and comfort. Parents of teens experience deep anxiety when they don’t show up when they’re expected… calls are made and prayers are offered… we even get in the car and go out looking for them… We want to know their welfare! We want to know they’re doing alright!

It’s no different with conscientious, caring, “Spiritual parents”…
After using the analogy of “a nursing mother” and a “father with his children” to describe his relationship with the new believers in Thessalonica (I Thessalonians 2:7, 12), Apostle Paul describes his deep concern for their spiritual welfare…

“Since we were town away from you for a short time, in person, not in heart, we endeavored the more eagerly and with great desire to see you face to face… but Satan hindered us. For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at His coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy! Therefore when we could bear it no longer… we sent Timothy…to establish and exhort [i.e. encourage] you in your faith, that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this [i.e. afflictions]. For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass… For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter [i.e. Satan] had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.” (From I Thessalonians 2:17 – 3:5 ESV)

That passage has conscientious, caring, spiritual parenting written all over it! As a “Spiritual care-giver” I want to exhibit that kind of care and concern! I want to be ready to do everything I can to help new believers when they face affliction and temptation! I want my “How are you doing?” comments to be more than passing statements – I want them to be sincere expressions of concern!

One more thing… Praise the Lord for every sincere, compassionate, spiritual parent and care-giver! I’m grateful for every one of them that invested in my Spiritual growth and maturity! And I want to be that kind of person to fellow Christians in their spiritual journey… Thanks for your example Apostle Paul!

Songs of Ascents: Trusting in the Lord on your life-journey – Three assurances. Psalm 125

Songs of AscentsPart of my Bible reading right now during “Coffee with the Lord” each morning includes a group of Psalms that are labeled “Songs of Ascents” (Psalms 120 – 134) These Psalms were traditionally “sung” by pilgrims as they traveled up to the temple mount in Jerusalem for sacrifice and worship. It helps to keep in mind the pilgrim’s journey and its purpose as you read and reflect upon them. Just let me say, they include some wonderful stuff! (Pic – Jerusalem from a distance)
Today’s “Song of Ascents,” Psalm 125, was no exception! It provides wonderful assurances to those who “trust in the Lord” on their spiritual journey. Three assurances are especially identified…
THEY ENDURE: “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever!”
THEY ARE PROTECTED: “As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people, from this time forth and forevermore! The scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous, lest the righteous stretch out their hands to do wrong.”
AND THEY ARE BLESSED! “Do good, O Lord, to those who are good, and to those who are upright in their hearts.”
(From Psalm 125 ESV)
What wonderful assurances to those who put their trust in the Lord and those who do what is right! Makes me want to live that way more than ever! How about you?
