Victim or Victor? … Perspective is everything!

Bad things… unfair things happen to all of us! I’ve got a list I could give you right now! To dwell on those things, to fuss over them and brood over them, just makes you morose, bitter and mad! Perspective is everything!

Joseph in the Bible teaches that truth! Sold into slavery by jealous brothers. Then purchased as a common slave by Potiphar, an official of Pharoah, king of Egypt. He was seduced and then falsely accused when he resisted the sexual advances of Potiphar’s wife. Then he was jailed on the unjust accusation of sexual assault. To top it off, in prison he was forgotten by someone who promised to help him… He could have said, “I’ve been victimized every step of the way… over and over again!”

And yet, through it all, the Bible says, “God made him to prosper!”

Hatred for his brothers who sold him into slavery could have been an inflamed, festering wound in his life! But it wasn’t! Joseph set aside resentment, recognized the grace of God at work in spite of the injustices, sought to be a blessing in whatever circumstances he found himself, and moved on… And “God made him to prosper!”

And then Joseph is faced with an opportunity to “get even” – to make his brothers pay for the injustice done to him! Does he do it? No, instead here is what happened… “Joseph made himself known to his brothers… and he wept aloud! So joseph said to his brothers, ‘Come near to me, please… I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life… God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God!’” (From Genesis 45:1-8)

What generates this kind of perspective… Certainly not a victimization perspective! That kind of outlook only leads to bitterness, hatred and the determination to get vengeance. What Joseph demonstrates is a deep conviction in the sovereign, providential activity of God! A grace viewpoint of life! A faith filled life cup! The deep conviction that “All things work together for good, for those who love God and are called according to His purpose”… and “If God is for us, who can be against us?”… and “In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who love us!” (From Romans 8:28-39)

So I guess here is the lesson learned… We need to lay aside the resentment for all the injustices done to us and what seems to be grossly unfair, put our lives and circumstances in the Lord’s hands, rest in the confidence He is at work in our lives, and move on, determined to be a blessing to those around us, ready to forgive those who have wronged us with the grace that God provides! Don’t know about you, but I’m going to follow the example of Joseph (and Jesus)!

A good church is like great acappella harmony… “with one voice glorifying God!”

Acappela Harmony
I had the privilege as a high school and college student to participate in choir and small ensembles… even got to participate in All State Choir. I learned a lot from those experiences… many of the lessons I learned were life lessons!
I learned the importance of intonation. I learned the importance of supporting vocalization with correct breathing. I learned the importance of tonal location within my mouth to achieve maximum vocal projection and quality. I learned to manage and limit my personal vibrato when singing in an ensemble to achieve harmony within the group… just a few of the lessons I learned.
I still thrill to hear a beautiful unison in which it seems the vocal ensemble is singing with “one voice!” And it even gets better when they split into a beautiful harmony and sustain the “one voice” effect… No voice dominating the other, vibrato limited, tonal perfection, acappella heaven! Whenever I hear it, it makes my skin crawl! Love it!!! But it takes self-control… the management of individual ability to achieve total harmonic effect and beauty!
Spiritually, that is what Apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, urged believers to practice in a local church! He said, “We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves! Let each of us please his neighbor for his good to build him up. Christ did not please Himself! … May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live IN SUCH HARMONY WITH ONE ANOTHER, in accord with Christ Jesus [our director], THAT TOGETHER you may WITH ONE VOICE glorify the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ!” (from Romans 15:1-7)
Just let me say, when that happens in a local church it is a powerful thing! It is a beautiful thing! The spiritual impact within a community (even on a broader scale – the whole world) is incredible! Christ is honored, the gospel is furthered, and multitudes come to know Christ and are discipled to be like Him! But it takes self-management, the limitation of selfish expression, and a personal and mutual commitment to the common good in order to achieve it! Oh may we do it! May we be in “such harmony with one another that together, WITH ONE VOICE, WE GLORIFY the God and father of our Lord Jesus Christ!” It’ll be awesome!

Been a tough year so far? I’ve got a wonderful encouraging passage of Scripture for you today!

I read a wonderful, encouraging passage of Scripture this morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord!” I pass it on to you today… Following is my paraphrased summary of its message (and then the words of the passage itself)…
First my paraphrased summary of its message…
Has it been a tough year so far? Have you felt just like giving up? Hang in there! Be faithful! One of these days the Lord will show up and everything will change for the better!
The passage? – from Isaiah 35:3–10 (ESV)
“Strengthen the weak hands! Make firm the feeble knees! Say to those who have an anxious heart, ‘Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come…and save you.’ Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy! … And a highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it… but the redeemed shall walk there. And the ransomed of the LORD shall return and come to Zion with singing; everlasting joy shall be upon their heads; they shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away!”
What a wonderful word of encouragement to those who may be facing incredible difficulty and challenges! Take God’s word to heart! Depend on its truth! Draw strength from God’s promises!
