Freedom is a wonderful thing! … but beware!

FreedomFreedom in Christ is a wonderful thing! We are not under “Law” but under God’s grace in Christ! But grace must never be used as an excuse for sinning! (Romans 6:15) And the freedom I have in Christ must never be used to excuse inconsiderate behavior that might damage or offend a fellow Christian or leads them back into sin! Spiritual maturity and Christian love demands that of me!

In fact, this morning I read the following words in Apostle Paul’s letter to the Roman Christians and recommitted myself to heed them…
“Let us decide NEVER to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother [or sister]! If your brother [or sister] is grieved by [anything you do] you are no longer walking in love! Do not destroy one for whom Christ died by what you do. Do not let what you regard as ‘good’ be spoken of as evil… Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. So then, let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding!” (from Romans 14:13-19)

Now I am aware the issue at hand for Paul and the Romans had to do with the freedom to eat food that was considered by some, ceremonially “clean” or “unclean” … but the issue is broader than that for us. It has to do with doing ANYTHING in the name or freedom that would cause spiritual offense or damage to a fellow believer! In fact, in another epistle of Paul’s he reminds us… “You were called to freedom, only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the ‘flesh,’ [what the natural self under the control of sin wants to do] but through love serve one another. (Galatians 5:13) Don’t know about you today, but I have renewed my commitment as a Christian to limit my freedom for the spiritual benefit of fellow Christians!

A prayer… an affirmation… and an old gospel song for troubled times!

My anchor holds

We live in a troubled world! Every day we hear of new trouble spots. It seems one crisis after another pops up like popcorn in a hot pot. What to do? As a person of faith, how to respond?

This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I read a passage of Scripture that I think can be of help… A prayer to lift to God and an affirmation to cling to…

First the prayer…

“Oh Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for You! Be our strong arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble!”

Then the affirmation…

“The Lord is exalted for He dwells on high; He will fill Zion [where His people dwell] with justice and righteousness, and He will be the stability of our times, abundance of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge; the fear of the Lord [reverence for the Lord] is Zion’s treasure!” (from Isaiah 33:2-6)

Reminds me of the words of an old gospel song…

“In times like these you need a Savior
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

“In times like these you need the Bible,
In times like these O be not idle;
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

“In times like these I have a Savior!
In times like these I have an anchor!
I’m very sure, I’m very sure
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

Refrain:
“This Rock is Jesus, Yes, He’s the One;
This Rock is Jesus, the only One!
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!”

The potential of 12 ordinary people empowered by the Holy Spirit

Ordinary People

Twelve very ordinary people… I mean VERY ordinary (not one of them was a trained theologian – not one of them with a PhD – not one of them even with a college degree as we would think of it)!  Jesus saw them (saw potential in them), called them to follow Him, taught them, trained them, and then did this to them…

“And He called to Him His twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction (that’s right… “EVERY!”)… These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them… Proclaim, ‘the kingdom of heaven is at hand.  Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons.  You received without paying for it – give without expecting pay for it.’”  (from Matthew 10:1-8 ESV and some personal translation)

We get the wrong idea… (and It’s certainly NOT from anything Jesus said or taught) that this kind of ministry is reserved for “super-saints” and super-charged, credentialed ministers of the gospel.  That’s just not true!

Mark’s gospel records what the church believed to be the authentic words of Jesus… “These signs will accompany those who believe:  In my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; the will pick up serpents with their hand; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them [those last two I believe to be an assurance of divine protection for those engaged in service for the Lord – not an authorization to do what is STUPID!], and they will lay their hands on the sick and they will recover” … And then the Bible records this: “And they went out and preached [or proclaimed] everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.”  Again… this, in my opinion is the reliable record of what actually happened passed on to us by the ancient church!

The book of Acts in the Bible records the wonderful exploits of ordinary believers empowered and led by the Holy Spirit!  God’s method has not changed!  He still uses ordinary believers… In fact Apostle Paul had the inspired audacity to call them, “the Body of Christ” [We’re to be His hands, His feet, His voice, and His healing ministry TODAY… In OUR WORLD… And our challenge is to represent HIM in the POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT without distortion!)  That’s right, ordinary people empowered and led by the Holy Spirit!  I used to tell my students at SAGU… “You want miracles?  Miracles happen in the “trenches” – out there serving God somewhere in our world in the power of the Holy Spirit – wherever He leads you!”
