Don’t know about you… I need more than a human priest! I need a “divine-human” priest to deal with my sin and need!

Priest offering
Priests, according to Webster’s dictionary, “perform sacred rites as a mediatory agents between man and God.” That’s a pretty good definition I think. (cp. Hebrews 5:1)

The book of Hebrews in the Bible compares merely human priests (especially Jewish priests) with Jesus, “our great high priest.” And the point is this: Merely human priests are not able to decisively and completely deal with human failings (“sin”) and need. They are simply human… they have “sin” and needs of their own. Jesus, however, is an entirely different kind of priest, designated by Jehovah God – our Heavenly Father – to act as “our Great High Priest! He is not merely human… He is also divine! He is God! But he is more… He is the “God-man”!

This morning I read these wonderful words about His priesthood in the Bible during “coffee with the Lord” and worshiped!

“If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood… why was there still a need for another priest to come… One who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life? … He [Jesus Christ] became a priest with an oath when God said to him: ‘The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever!’ Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant. Now there have been many of those priests [human priests], but death prevented them from continuing in office; but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood! THEREFORE HE IS ABLE TO SAVE COMPLETELY THOSE WHO COME TO GOD THROUGH HIM, BECAUSE HE ALWAYS LIVES TO INTERCEDE FOR THEM. Such a high priest truly meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens! Unlike the other high priests [merely human priests], He does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for His own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered Himself! For the law appoints as high priests men in all their weakness; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever!” (from Hebrews 7:11-28 NIV)

Just gotta tell you, I’m worshipping! I need MORE than merely a human priest – one with human weakness, failings and needs! I need an Almighty God appointed priest – One who is both human and divine – One who, because he is human understands my needs; but One who, on the other hand, who is also divine –God! – who because He is God can decisively deal with my sin and failings! And, Oh praise the Lord, I have One – Jesus Christ, my “Great High Priest” who offered Himself up for my sin and sits at the Father’s right hand in the Heavenly Temple, interceding (appealing the merits of His sacrifice on the cross) for me! Something to be grateful for I tell you! Something for which to offer praise God! … And I am!!!

I want my heart to long for and pray for the things that Jesus longed for and prayed for!

This morning my heart echoes the heart’s cry of Jesus my Savior and Lord! If this is what He longed for and expressed to the Father in His high priestly prayer, it what I desire and pray for as well! Oh, may we be faithful in sharing the message of the gospel with others! May there be authentic unity among those who are Christ followers so that others will be attracted to Him! May His desire that one day we all be with Him forever be completely realized! Here it is in His own words…

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me… May they be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” (John 17:20–24 NIV)

He wanted that! I want that! I want His heart to be what my heart longs for! And that’s what I prayed for this Lord’s Day morning!

Good news! God’s grace is greater than our sin!

Oh the incredible mercy of God! Hosea tells the story, in an acted out parable, of Israel’s flagrant spiritual “adultery” and God’s promised judgment. But it also tells the wonderful story of God’s forgiveness, restoration, and acceptance! It is a story that should give every backslider – every unfaithful Christian – hope!
To God’s people, Israel, who in their rebellion had committed the most disgusting and ungrateful acts of spiritual “adultery,” and should have expected judgment and complete rejection, God spoke through His prophet and said…
“I will betroth you to Me forever! I will betroth you in righteousness and justice – in love and compassion! I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the Lord! … I will show My love to the one I call ‘Not my loved one.’ I will say to those called ‘Not My people’, ‘You are My people’; and they will say, ‘You are My God!” (Hosea 2:19, 23 NIV)
I don’t know how far you may have wandered away from God. I don’t know what sins you may have committed. But I do know this: I know that the Bible says, “Where sin increased, grace increased all the more!” (Romans 5:20 NIV) And the words of a wonderful old gospel song come to mind…
1. Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,
Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt!
Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured,
There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled.
Refrain:
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that will pardon and cleanse within;
Grace, grace, God’s grace,
Grace that is greater than all our sin!
2. Sin and despair, like the sea waves cold,
Threaten the soul with infinite loss;
Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold,
Points to the refuge, the mighty cross.
3. Dark is the stain that we cannot hide;
What can we do to wash it away?
Look! There is flowing a crimson tide,
Brighter than snow you may be today.
4. Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace,
Freely bestowed on all who believe!
You that are longing to see His face,
Will you this moment His grace receive?
