Impatience and Anger – Two wild horses that need to learn to take a bridle!

Impatience Anger
Patience (the lack of it and need for it) and anger… two closely related human emotions! Here’s what Proverbs 16:32 has to say about them…
“Better a patient man than a warrior and a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.”
Don’t know about you, but I struggle with the patience thing! … Traffic (and “dumb” drivers; what I perceive as “stupidity”; long, slow moving lines (and people who try to cut in); persistent actions by others that aggravate me; stupid politicians; and even a spouse sometimes… I start “building up a head of steam” and then watch out! Know what I mean? Sometimes it “blows” – other times I internalize it (both bad choices!) “Getting a bridle” on that wild horse (perhaps we could better say, on those wild horses) is a challenge!
But we have help! The Christian has access to “the Helper” – the Holy Spirit! He will “nudge” us when impatience begins to build up into destructive anger. He will enable us to release it, forgive, and express authentic love instead. Here is what the Bible says… “The fruit of the Spirit is LOVE, joy PEACE, PATIENCE, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, SELF-CONTROL… and those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit!” (Galatians 5:22-25)
My plan? I’m going to try to be more sensitive and responsive to the work of the Holy Spirit within my life… I’m going to try to be more alert to His “nudge” and depend on Him to enable me to respond appropriately when the pressure begins to build, and impatience leads to anger. I’ve been a Christian for a while but I’m still learning to cooperate with what the Holy Spirit wants to produce in my life to make me more “Christ-like.” You too, eh?

“Good News and Bad News… Which do you want to hear first?” -Jesus

Bad news - Good news

Ever hear these words? “I’ve got some news for you… Some of it’s good, some of it’s bad… Which do you want to hear first?”

Well, in my Bible reading the last couple of days during “Coffee with the Lord” I’ve felt like that is what Jesus has been telling me… I’ve been reading passages from John 14-16.

The good news: Jesus isn’t going to let us flounder in a difficult world filled with trials, temptations and even persecution… He sent the “Helper” – the Holy Spirit to help us, instruct us, lead us and empower us!

The bad news: He was going to leave earth after His death and resurrection and return to heaven. There would be trials, difficulty, and persecution… even death for His followers.

But then His final word of assurance to His disciples…

“I have told you these things, so that in my you may have peace! In this world you will have trouble. But take heart – I have overcome the world!”

Some bad news… Yes. But Oh, the good news!!! The peace He gives regardless of what we have to face in the future! Peace beyond comprehension! (Check out Philippians 4:6-7) And the promise – the assurance? “Take heart! I have overcome the world!” Think I’m going to make it… and make it victoriously, regardless of what the future brings!

Broken promises! Jesus is not like that… He keeps His promises!

Broken Promises

Some people in emotional moments make all kinds of promises… at the moment they’re sincere – they intend to keep their promises, but frankly later on they find out they’re unable to keep them.  Others, tragically, never intend to keep their promises… their promises are all cosmetics and hype.  If you believe them, you find yourself disillusioned, dismayed and just a little disgusted!

Jesus is not like that!  He keeps his promises (even when they seem incredible to us)! (Check out 2 Corinthians 1:20 – “All the promises of God find their ‘Yes!’ in Christ.  That is why it is through Him that we utter our ‘Amen!’ to God for His glory.”)

I read the following this morning during my time of “Coffee with the Lord”…

Jesus said to his disciples, “’In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.’  Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this so he said to them ‘Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me?  I tell you the truth you will weep and mourn while the world rejoices.  You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.’ … Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.  In that day you will no longer ask me anything.  I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name!  Until now you have not asked for anything in my name.  Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” (from John 16;16-24 NIV)

Gotta tell you, I believe Him!  Jesus is not like others who make all kinds of promises in emotional moments and never keep them.  Jesus keeps His promises… even when they seem incredible to us!  Don’t know about you… I’m going to trust Him!  I’m not going to act like a spoiled child who demands all kinds of stuff for selfish reasons!  But I’m not going to be intimidated either!  He said it after all! … “Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete!”
