Can’t avoid or neglect my obligation to His mandate!

Sharing the Gospel

Today during “coffee with the Lord” I reflected on my responsibilities as a “disciple” – a devoted, obedient follower of the Lord.  I thought about my responsibilities to share my faith in Christ with others… my responsibilities for evangelism… my responsibility to “make disciples.”

I thought about how sometimes I think we perhaps consider that an optional activity… How we are kind of “laid back” in our approach to it… perhaps just doing it “as opportunity arises” or leaving it to “super saints” or “professionals.” No urgency!  No sense of responsibility!  What a mistake!  What a terrible sin of omission or act of disobedience!

Suppose we went to work one day and our employer said, “Now here’s your responsibility… I want you to do this or that for me.”  Would he be satisfied if we considered his directive “optional?”  Would he be pleased if we did whatever we wanted in the coming days, and only did what he directed us to do “as opportunity arises” or when “we were especially motivated” or “when we got around to it?”  I have a feeling our “boss” (you might use the word “lord” there I guess) would not be satisfied or pleased, and we probably would not be employed for very long.

Our “mandate” (yes, we use that word) is to “make disciples!”  Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:18-19)  Mark records Jesus said, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” (Mark 16:15)  John says Jesus told His disciples, “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you!” And then He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit!” (John 20:21-22)  Is it any wonder then that Apostle Paul said, “I am under obligation bot to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish… So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.” (Romans 1:14)

I have a feeling we take our “mandate” much too lightly – to casually – as followers of Jesus.  One day He will return and there will be an accounting.  I want to be motivated to obey, not from guilt, but from intense love and appreciation for what He has done for me… and for the whole world!  Paul put it this way, “Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade others… The love of Christ controls (or motivates) us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all,… He died for all that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised!” (2 Corinthians 5:11-15)  Oh, when He returns and I stand before Him, I want to hear those words, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” (Matthew 25:23)

Where can a person find safety in a dangerous world? …Proverbs 18:10

When you home protection system fails… When your neighbors never seem to notice the things that are happening in your neighborhood… When you fear that your Doberman will act like Lassie and not a guard dog… When your handgun malfunctions when confronting an intruder… etc.

Then it’s time to depend on the truth of this verse…

“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe!” (Proverbs 18:10)

In fact… You’re safer with His presence and protection than you are with all of those things anyway! There’re OK I guess – don’t neglect doing what you can to protect yourself, your family and your property – but be sure… be very sure, to put everything in the Lord’s hands every day!

Every time I read Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy in the Old Testament I’m grateful for a “New Covenant”!

Every time I read portions of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy in the Old Testament I am blown away by the laws, regulations, ceremonial requirements and sacrificial system that governed God’s people!  Frankly I don’t know how well I would have done!  Without a merciful, loving God and promises of forgiveness I’m pretty sure I would have failed!  The Old Covenant was rigorous and demanding!

That’s why when I read the following words this morning from the book of Hebrews in the New Testament I rejoiced (and I admit it… I breathed a grateful sigh of relief)!

“But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises!  If the first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no need for a second covenant to replace it… ‘The day is coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and Judah…  This is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people… I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.’” (from Hebrews 8:6–13 NLT)

That’s what I needed… And I’m pretty sure that is what you need as well… A “new covenant!”  A covenant that transforms me!  A covenant that gives me a desire to do what pleases God!  A covenant by which God accepts me as his very own – His child!  A covenant in which God obligates Himself to forgive my sin when I acknowledge them and ask for forgiveness! (1 John 1:8-9)

Every time I think about it, I’m blown away by what Jesus said at the last supper when He celebrated the Passover with his disciples… “He took the cup after supper saying, ‘this cup is the new covenant in my blood.’”  Then he went to the cross and sealed it by dying there for my sin and yours!  What a wonderful Savior!
