Want a “Charlie Brown Christmas? … “Love one another!”

Charlie Brown Christmas

December 23 … Two days til Christmas!  For many people “prep time” for the big day!  For others travel time – going “home” to be with family or a journey to be with friends!  Hearts are filled with joyful anticipation (or perhaps a bit of trepidation).

I don’t know why it is, but Christmas, a holiday with high expectations for joy, peace and satisfying relationship, sometimes degenerates into conflict, misunderstanding and pain.  I guess we could chalk it up to our own lack of self-management at times, but I sometimes wonder if there isn’t an evil saboteur at work to destroy relationships at a time like Christmas (I call him Satan)!  And the tragedy?  Christians fall into the trap – the very people who claim as their two “great commandments,” Loving God and loving their neighbor (Matthew 22:38-40)!

So today in my Bible reading during “coffee with the Lord” I got this healthy reminder (and word of caution) from 2 John 4-5 that I think applies to Christmastime and our gatherings with family and friends:  “And now I ask you… not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning – that we love one another.”

We’re not just talking about feelings of affection here – we’re talking about a verb – something we act on and do!  In some cases it’s going to take some “fruit of the Spirit” called “patience” and “self control” (but it is something the Holy Spirit will help you to do!  Galatians 5:22-23).  Apostle Paul’s challenge comes to mind:  “Therefore I … beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.  Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-3)

Here’s praying you have a wonderful, Christ-centered Christmas, filled with the love, peace and joy that He produces in our lives through the Holy Spirit!

“Oh God…King of the nations…who will not come and worship You?!”

Desire of all nationsMany today embrace a kind of polytheism, the worship of many gods, in the name of tolerance and pluralism. They claim you can believe and embrace whatever you want to believe. They say, “I’ll believe what works for me. You believe what works for you! All gods – all faiths – are basically equal.”
Just let me say, that is NOT the biblical perspective! Christians understand that they worship “the One True God!” They are not arrogant about it, but on the other hand they are not apologetic about it… They are confident about it. In fact, their hearts burn with passionate love for all peoples of the world to come to know the “One True God” in a personal way – a God of love.
Spiritual maturity then, is not seeing things as they are presently, but seeing them as they one day will be. – seeing things from an eternal perspective!
This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I read a passage that affirms the eternal perspective… Revelation 15:2-4
Revelation 15:2–4 (ESV)
“And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. And they sang the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, ‘Great and amazing are your deeds, O LORD GOD THE ALMIGHTY! Just and true are your ways, O KING OF THE NATIONS! Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. ALL NATIONS WILL COME AND WORSHIP YOU, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
That’s the eternal perspective… He is “King of the Nations!” – One day that will be revealed completely… and fulfilled! One day “all nations will come and worship Him!” He is “the One True God” and His hearts beats passionate, redemptive love for all peoples of the world! The Heavenly Father sent His Son, Jesus Christ, not as a provincial or territorial god (little “g”) – but as a universal, cosmic, timeless God (big “G”) – the One True God. “God SO LOVED the WORLD, that He sent his Only Begotten Son, that WHOEVER Believes in Him, should not perish, but have everlasting life!” (John 3:16) “King of the Nations – All nations coming and worshipping Him” – that’s the eternal perspective! That’s the perspective I embrace and am working toward!

Battling fearful uncertainty about the future? There is an answer!

Uncertain FutureI meet people all the time who battle fearful uncertainty about the future, spiritual ambiguity, and insecurity about their relationship with God. This is NOT a pleasant way to live your life!

This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I read a wonderful passage of Scripture dominated by the phrase “that you may know!” Apostle John, inspired by the Holy Spirit, assured his audience (and us) that there are some things we can know! He said…

1. We can know we have eternal life!

2. We can know God hears and answers our prayers!

3. We can know victory over sin and Satan!

4. We can know that we belong to God!

5. We can know “the truth” as it is to be found in Jesus Christ!

His message is found in 1 John 5:13-21 in your Bible! Why not get your Bible, find the passage, and read it for yourself! If you believe what Apostle John says it will drive the uncertainty, ambiguity, and insecurity from your life!
