“A tent or a cottage, why should I care! They’re building a mansion for me over there!”

Sharon, my wife, and I decided to downsize. We sold a nice larger home on a big lot in the country the first of July, and looked for a lot in Waxahachie, TX near Southwestern Assemblies of God University where I’ve served for over 30 years. While our house was being planned, and built, we moved into Regent apartments at the University – a little apartment of less than 700 square feet designed for student occupancy… very basic: No oven, two burner hotplate, and a microwave/convection combination. So it’s been ten months in a student apartment while our lot was procured, the house planned, approvals gotten and then the house built. I’ve griped a bit, been frustrated a time or two, and experienced “cabin fever” … But we’ve finally got our certificate of occupancy for our new home and it looks like we’ll be finally be moving in the first part of next week! Can’t wait … it’s nice!!!

And this was my Bible reading this morning… No kidding!

“We know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands! We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies… We will put on heavenly bodies! … While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it’s not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life! God himself has prepared us for this, and as a guarantee he has given us his Holy Spirit. So we are always confident, even though we know that as long as we live in these bodies we are not at home with the Lord… Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him.” (From 2 Corinthians 5:1–9 NLT)

So this is what I jotted in my Bible this morning… “Right now I’m living in temporary housing but I’m waiting for my eternal home in heaven! I may feel frustrated at times with what life brings, but this house is temporary! I’m expecting a house in heaven, an eternal body made by God Himself and it will be grand! It will be worth the wait! Lord help me to wait patiently and never lose my sense of expectancy!”

The Lord’s abundant blessing… But its purpose might surprise you…

BIBLE QUOTES HD-WALLPAPERS FREE DOWNLOADThe Lord’s blessing is rich, wonderful and GOOD! Oh, and better yet, it overflows – it’s profuse and abundant! The tragedy is, if we’re not careful, it gets heavily seasoned with the sad sauce of selfishness… it becomes all about us!
Here’s the truth of the matter Biblically… We’re blessed to be a blessing! Here’s what the Lord told Abraham… “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, SO THAT YOU WILL BE A BLESSING! I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and IN YOU ALL THE FAMILIES OF THE EARTH SHALL BE BLESSED!” The Lord established that pattern and paradigm early in human history and nothing has changed!
So here’s the deal from my Bible reading during my time of “coffee with the Lord” this morning… Psalm 67…
“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make His face to shine upon us, that Your way may be known on earth, Your saving power among all nations! Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You! Let the nations be glad and sing for joy, for You judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth. Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples praise You! … God, our God, shall bless us! God shall bless us; let all the ends of the earth fear him!” (From Psalm 67 ESV)
Blessed to be a blessing! Oh Lord, I want to see things that way… I want to live that way!!!

Effusive Praise… Kinda like a Spiritual “Old Faithful!”

Old FaithfulGod has been so merciful and gracious to us! He has given us much more than we deserve… In fact if He were to give us what we deserve, it’s frightening! He saves us from our sin! He hears and answers our prayers! He delivers us from all kinds of calamities! He works miracles on our behalf! His love, grace and goodness are boundless! We need to praise him! A word came to mind this morning as I thought about the goodness and grace of the Lord and my need to praise Him as I was reading Psalm 66 in the Bible… Here it is – my praise should be “effusive!”
Ever see “Old Faithful” perform her dramatics in Yellowstone National Park in the United States? The internal pressure builds, and builds, and builds and then erupts, spewing hot steam and water into the air… That’s “effusive!” The dictionary defines it as “expressing feelings of gratitude, pleasure, or approval in an unrestrained or heartfelt manner. Synonyms are… gushing, gushy, unrestrained, extravagant, fulsome, demonstrative, lavish, and enthusiastic.” That is what Old Faithful does when the pressure builds… That is what I should do as I reflect upon all that the Lord has done for me!
Here’s how Psalm 66 describes “effusive” praise…
“Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God, ‘How awesome are your deeds! How great is your power! … All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name!’ Come and see what God has done: He is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man! … Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of His praise be heard, Who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. For you, O God, have tested us … we went through fire and through water; yet You have brought us out to a place of abundance! … Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what He has done for my soul. I cried to Him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue. If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened. But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer! Blessed be God, because He has not rejected my prayer or removed His steadfast love from me!” (From Psalm 66 ESV)
Thinking about the goodness of the Lord today… The pressure is building… “Effusive” praise is developing! “Bless the Lord, O peoples – Let the sound of His praise be heard!”
