On this Years Day… I again covenant to pray for each member of my family every day!

Praying for your family

It’s New Years… And I did what I usually do… I got up early, made myself a cup of coffee, got my Bible and had “coffee with the Lord”… I used “Necessary Food” (the Bible reading plan I developed based upon Job 23:12: “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food”). And I read (and reflected upon) the following passages:

From the Old Testament historical books: Genesis 1:1 – 2:3

Biblical poetry: Job 1:1-5

The prophetic books: Isaiah 1:1-31

The gospels and Acts: Matthew 1:1-17

The epistles: Romans 1:1-7

The “take away” for me from one of those passages this morning?

The Bible describes Job as “a blameless and upright man, one who feared [reverenced] God and turned away from evil.” It goes on to say, he was “the greatest of all the people of the east” (in other words, not only wealthy but a man of great influence). He had a family he cared about and loved! He interceded for them regularly… Here is what the Bible says:

“Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burn offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, ‘It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts.’ THUS JOB DID CONTINUALLY!” (from Job 1:5)

I am a parent and grandparent (and believe it or not, I even have 4 great-grandchildren!). I love my family and have deep concern, not only for their physical, emotional, mental and social well-being, but even more for their spiritual welfare! This morning I was challenged to do what Job did… He interceded for the members of his family. So I wrote this in the margin of my Bible… “On this first day of 2018 I again covenant to do the equivalent of what Job did in the Bible! I will pray for every member of my family, my wife, my children (and their spouses), my grand-children (and the spouses of those who are married) and my great-grandchildren daily! I will mention each one of them by name to the Lord and pray for their physical, emotional, mental, social, AND SPIRITUAL WELFARE daily. Job did something like that for his family… I’m going to do it again this year for my family!

Stumbled a time or two in 2017? … Put on your running shoes for 2018 with confidence!

I’m happy to say I finished reading the Bible again this year… and a very appropriate passage that was a part of my reading this morning, it seems to me, was Jude 24-25 (from that little one chapter book in the Bible just before Revelation).

Be honest with yourself… in the Christian journey during 2017 have you had a stumble or two, a failure, a disappointment, a regret? I have, to my sorrow! (Thank God for grace and forgiveness, eh?) I want 2018 to be better, don’t you! How did the old gospel song express it? “Victory ahead!”

Here’s what I jotted in the margin of my Bible this morning next to Jude 24-25…

Needed on New Year’s Eve, 12/31/2017! … And needed on New Year’s Eve every year… not only that – at the beginning of every day of my life … HE IS ABLE!”

Oh, the passage? Here it is (worth memorizing!)… “Now to Him WHO IS ABLE to keep you from falling and to present you blameless before the presence of His glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, BEFORE ALL TIME and NOW and FOREVER! Amen!”

So… leaving 2017 behind and looking ahead…Put on your running shoes with hope and confidence! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A challenging year almost over… How did we make it? “Day by day…”

Checking off the daysSome of you today that are reading this post have experienced pain, loss, trials, disappointments, and grief the past year. 2017 is coming to an end and you actually marvel that you’ve made it! It’s been the grace of God and the inner enabling strength the Lord has provided.

Sharon and I were reflecting this morning on the track record of wonderful parents through the years and the legacy of strength and patience they exhibited in the face of all that life brought their way… How did they do it? I mean, how did they do it!!!

As we talked and reflected on it, the words of this gospel song came to mind that provides a clue. I offer it to you today that are finishing a very trying year, and to those who face the challenges of the coming year…

“Day by day and with each passing moment,
Strength I find to meet my trials here;
Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment,
I’ve no cause for worry or for fear.
He whose heart is kind beyond all measure
Gives unto each day what He deems best–
Lovingly, its part of pain and pleasure,
Mingling toil with peace and rest.

“Ev’ry day the Lord Himself is near me
With a special mercy for each hour!
All my cares He fain would bear, and cheer me,
He whose name is Counselor and Power.
The protection of His child and treasure
Is a charge that on Himself He laid!
“As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,”
This the pledge to me He made!

“Help me then in every tribulation
So to trust Thy promises, O Lord,
That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation
Offered me within Thy Holy Word!
Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting,
E’er to take, as from a Father’s hand,
One by one, the days, the moments fleeting,
Till I reach the promised land.”
