Expressing pain and grief does not mean you don’t love God – and that He doesn’t love you!

Grief and AnguishToday, in my “coffee with the Lord” post, I want to affirm that in times of severe and persistent pain, great loss, and Satanic attack, Job 3 (you should read it in your Bible) expresses how godly people sometimes feel! And that’s ok … God isn’t shaken by their feelings and grief when they vent such feelings!!! Here’s just a brief introduction to Jobs grief after losing everything he held dear and Satan’s attack on him physically…

“After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth… Why did I not die at birth! … Why is light given to the one who is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul… For the thing that I feared has come upon me, and what I dreaded has befallen me!” (From Job 3)

Now if you doubt that Job was godly, here is God’s assessment of him… “There was a man whose name was Job, that he was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil… And the Lord said to Satan, ‘Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil?’’ (In fact, God said that twice about Job to Satan!) Furthermore, this is said of Job after he lost everything he held dear in a single day… “In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong” … and later, “In all this Job did not sin with his lips!” (from Job 1 & 2)

Hey, sometimes bad things happen to good people! Grief is natural! Questions about why pain, suffering and loss are happening to us arise in our hearts and minds!

But God can handle that grief and those questions! And we can have this confidence… “Who can separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us! For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord!” (Romans 8:35-39)

Attitude is everything! Out of it flows everything else in life!

Attitude is everything.jpgATTITUDES are a big deal! They are the fertile seedbed out of which flow our ACTIONS! I think that is probably why the Bible warns us in Proverbs, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow all the issues of life!” (4:23) Many times we telegraph our attitudes in our countenance… our face (and other non-verbals) reveal how we feel, how we think, even what we are contemplating. I know my attitudes have sometimes led me to do what displeases the Lord – to sin! I know, my facial expressions, have telegraphed my bad attitudes and intentions (my wife, Sharon, can pick up on it in a moment, as well as I am sure others)!

I thought of that this morning in my Bible reading during “coffee with the Lord!” Here’s the passage that brought the issue to mind…

“In the course of time Cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. The LORD had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. The LORD said to Cain, ‘Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it!’ Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him! Then the LORD said to Cain, ‘Where is Abel your brother?’ He said, ‘I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?” (from Genesis 4:3–9 ESV)

As a result of reading that passage, this is what I jotted down for myself in the margin of my Bible this morning… “LeRoy, watch your attitudes, they’re important! And then do what you know pleases God!” I believe that will help me as I move forward in 2018 to keep me from sin and please the Lord!

Discovering “Your Reason for Being” is a big deal … Find it and Live it out in 2018!

Your Reason for BeingUnderstanding and embracing your “reason for being” is a big deal!  It’s the difference between pointless living or purposeful living – aimless drift or actionable goals – frustration or fruitfulness!

This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord,” Romans 1:8-15 was my Bible reading from the Epistles…  In that passage it seems to me that Apostle Paul gives us some clues to the fruitful life he enjoyed to guide us in the new year…

First of all he prioritized sharing the Gospel with others – the wonderful message of Christ and His power to transform lives!  Here is his testimony… “First of all, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.  For God is my witness, whom I serve in the gospel of His Son… I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish!  So I am eager to preach [proclaim] the gospel to you also who are in Rome.  I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek!”  (Romans 1:8-9, 14-16)  I’ve got to tell you, there are few things more satisfying than sharing the message of the gospel with others and then watching it powerfully transform their lives as they embrace it by faith!  Wow!  How good is that!!!

The second thing that impressed me in this passage was the “others orientation” of Paul’s purposeful living.  He understood selfless investment in others brought rich satisfaction and a sense of purpose!  Now, you need to keep in mind that Paul did not start the church in Rome… In fact, at the time of writing this epistle, he had never been there to invest in their spiritual growth and wellbeing!  So this is what he had to say to these relative strangers:  “Without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers!  I ask that somehow by God’s will I may now at last succeed in coming to you!  I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you – that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith – both yours and mine!” (Romans 1:9-12)  Hey, here’s a guy that understands satisfying, purposeful living is found in focusing on others!  He was also aware it was a reciprocal relationship – He’d invest in their spiritual wellbeing with the gifts God had given him, but they’d also contribute something rich and wonderful to His life!  It works like this… I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve gone to someone in deep need or pain to encourage them, to read Scripture to them, and pray for them; and before I left their side I discovered they had uplifted and encouraged me!  It just works that way!

So two keys to fulfilling, fruitful living in 2018:  First, share the gospel with someone as often as the Holy Spirit “nudges” you and you have an opportunity!  And second, selflessly reach out to others and simply seek to be a blessing to them and invest in their lives!  Believe me… you’ll discover, or rediscover, your “reason for being!”
