A bright, wonderful future or a dreadful, disastrous one… Which will it be?

a-bright-future

Some events we experience are glorious and wonderful… others are frightening – even disastrous! In my Bible reading today, I read the following in the book of Revelation about something wonderful that takes place at the end of time called “the first resurrection.” In the same chapter, however, it was contrasted with something terrible, called “the second death.”

Here’s what the Bible says about the two events…

“I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years… THIS IS THE FIRST RESURRECTION. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such THE SECOND DEATH has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years…

“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it… And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. THIS IS THE SECOND DEATH, the lake of fire. And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” (From Revelation 20:5-6 and 11-15)

Two events that will take place at the end of time… I jotted this in my Bible this morning after reading it… “I don’t know when ‘the first resurrection’ will happen, but I want to be a part of it! Though God’s grace and my trust in Christ Jesus as my Savior I believe I will be! The second event – ‘the second death’ – I want to avoid at all costs! I want to be sure that my name is clearly written in ‘the Book of Life!’ (cp. Revelation 13:8 and 21:7) And because I have trusted Jesus as my Savior I believe it is!”

Listen, I hope and pray you can claim that you’ll be a part of “the first resurrection” and that you name is clearly written in “the Book of Life!” Trusting Jesus to save you from your sin and give you eternal life is the key!
