Reverence for the Lord (or “the fear of the Lord”) is such a fundamental attitude and attribute in the life of the godly person! It is the root system that produces “wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10). But it is more than that… It is what causes us to resist temptation and say “NO!” to evil!
This is what I read this morning in the Bible… “The fear of the Lord (i.e. reverencing Him) is hatred of evil!” (Proverbs 8:13)
I can’t claim to “fear the Lord” and have a secret love affair with evil! My reverence for Him will create within me the attitude He has toward evil. My Heavenly Father sent His only Son, Jesus, as the sacrifice for sin. He came to destroy the works of the devil! In fact, the Bible declares, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil!” (1 John 3:8) God loves the people of the world and sent Jesus to save them from their sin! (John 3:16) He hates sin – He knows what it will do to those He loves – those He came to save. So if I reverence Him, I too, will hate sin, but I’ll love the sinner and do my best to introduce them to the Lord, who loved them enough to die on the cross for their sin!
So what is my prayer today? “Oh Lord, I love and reverence You! Please produce within me a righteous hatred for sin! But also produce within me a deep passion and love for the sinner! And help me to always remember that I’m only “a sinner saved by grace!” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
