My Bible reading this morning during “Coffee with the Lord” included Proverbs 8:1-11. It pictures “Wisdom” as calling out in the public square where everyone passing can hear her call – her invitation!
As I read it this morning I thought to myself, that is NOT what I hear in the public square! I hear messages that beckon the unsuspecting and impressionable to folly and sin! I hear messages that tempt the young and innocent to immorality and rebellious living! Anyone who has visited the main thoroughfare of a large city knows what I am talking about!
On the other hand, here is how the Bible describes “Wisdom’s call”…
“Does not wisdom call? Does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud: ‘To you I call; my cry is to the children of man. O simple ones, learn prudence; O fools, learn sense. Hear, for I will speak noble things, and from my lips will come what is right, for my mouth will utter truth; wickedness is an abomination to my lips! All the words of my mouth are righteous; there is nothing twisted or crooked in them…Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her!” (Proverbs 8:1–11 ESV)
I know what I am apt to hear in the public square of our great cities (and it is NOT that message)! Just look at the billboards, look at the advertisements, listen to the radio, and watch television – it is not the call of “Wisdom” you will hear! Instead it is the enticement of “Folly” to irresponsible, destructive behavior!
After reading this passage today, I jotted this personal message in the margin of my Bible… “I choose to personally help fulfill what this passage talks about! I want to be a voice that promotes the gaining of “Wisdom” in the public square! I want to encourage and help fund messages that advocate the gaining of wisdom and the “fear [or reverence] of God that brings it. I want to do everything in my power to make the gaining of wisdom very attractive to our culture! Lord help us find ways to make Proverbs 8:1-11 a reality in our day!
