Like Father – Like Son!

like-father-like-son

You’ve heard the saying before… “Like father – like son.” I don’t know how many times I’ve heard people who were looking at the pictures of small children remark, “Why he looks just like his daddy!” And they sometimes recognize family resemblance even in infants! (Figure that out! I have to admit that sometimes I think they’re just “attributing family resemblance” to babies. But they’re probably correct, it’s even there!) Sometimes, believe it or not, family resemblance is even noted by other people in adopted children! Now that one blows me away! Perhaps where it exists, it is somehow the result of family influence and character traits that are embraced and internalized.

One day Jesus was having a rather animated conversation with a group of individuals who happened to be Hebrews… They claimed in no uncertain terms, “’Abraham is our father.’ Jesus said to them, ‘If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works Abraham did, but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God! This is not what Abraham would have done. You are doing the works your father did.’ They said to him, ‘We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father—even God!’ […they were casting doubt on the legitimacy of Jesus’ birth!] But Jesus said to them, ‘If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and I am here. I came not of my own accord, but He sent me… You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies! But because I tell the truth, you do not believe me… Whoever is of God hears the words of God. The reason why you do not hear them is that you are not of God.’” (John 8:39–47 ESV)

So back to the adage… “Like father – like son!” The probing question is, “Who is your daddy?” Gotta tell you, I want my life to clearly exhibit the character and resemblance of my Heavenly Father! Lord, please help me never to behave “out of character!” It begins with “new birth” – a Spiritual rebirth – a transforming beginning! (John 3:1-8) And then the Holy Spirit goes to work, forming the character of Christ in our lives! (Galatians 5:22-23) Oh may we cooperate with what He is trying to do within us! I call him “Father God” – and that is what He is in my life! May I always I give clear evidence that God is my Father! Isn’t that what you want?

Imagine a cosmic “Let’s Make a Deal” game…

lets-make-a-dealImagine a cosmic game show like “Let’s Make a Deal.”  The contestant is offered a prize of inestimable worth behind one of four doors.  The question is, which door is of greatest worth … Door #1 – Wisdom; Door #2 – Long life; Door #3 – Riches; and Door #4 – Victory over all adversaries?  The countdown begins – the music plays – the tension builds… Which door should the contestant choose – which door will the contestant choose?

I thought of that imaginary scenario this morning as I read the story of Solomon, David’s son who followed him as king…  Here’s the account from the Bible (1 Kings 3:5–14 ESV) …

“At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, ‘Ask what I shall give you.’  [Which door would you choose?  Which door is best?]

“And Solomon said, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day.  And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in.  And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude.  Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?’ [Solomon chose door #1 – the door of wisdom in the fear or reverence of God]

“It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this.  And God said to him, ‘Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you.  I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days.  And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days.’” [And the prize … the blessing?  Solomon was given wisdom – and what was behind all the other doors as well; long life, riches, and victory over all his adversaries!]

After reading this passage this morning this is the question I asked myself… Which door would I choose?  Which would I consider the best gift?  After examining my heart I decided that Solomon was right!  Wisdom, the byproduct of reverencing God, is the best gift!  Hear me Lord… I want what the Bible calls “Wisdom!” – “Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness.  My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver! … Whoever find me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord!” (Proverbs 8:18-19, 35)

The “fear (or reverence) of the Lord is to hate evil!

Reverence for the Lord (or “the fear of the Lord”) is such a fundamental attitude and attribute in the life of the godly person! It is the root system that produces “wisdom” (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10). But it is more than that… It is what causes us to resist temptation and say “NO!” to evil!

This is what I read this morning in the Bible… “The fear of the Lord (i.e. reverencing Him) is hatred of evil!” (Proverbs 8:13)

I can’t claim to “fear the Lord” and have a secret love affair with evil! My reverence for Him will create within me the attitude He has toward evil. My Heavenly Father sent His only Son, Jesus, as the sacrifice for sin. He came to destroy the works of the devil! In fact, the Bible declares, “The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil!” (1 John 3:8) God loves the people of the world and sent Jesus to save them from their sin! (John 3:16) He hates sin – He knows what it will do to those He loves – those He came to save. So if I reverence Him, I too, will hate sin, but I’ll love the sinner and do my best to introduce them to the Lord, who loved them enough to die on the cross for their sin!

So what is my prayer today? “Oh Lord, I love and reverence You! Please produce within me a righteous hatred for sin! But also produce within me a deep passion and love for the sinner! And help me to always remember that I’m only “a sinner saved by grace!” (Ephesians 2:8-9)
