Psalm 91 – “The Soldier’s Psalm” (and Mine too!)

Just read Psalm 91 again this morning.  It’s message?  It pays to trust and serve the Lord in dangerous and difficult times.  Running to Him with your problems is a wise course of action!  And on this weekend when we celebrate “Memorial Day” in the United States the message of Psalm 91 seems especially appropriate… many a soldier in the middle of intense warfare has depended on its message – and many parents, spouses of soldiers in harms way have claimed it for “their soldier!”

In a time when a strong walled city, a secret cave, or a high, defensible rocky cliff were your only defense from a persistent and determined enemy, the Psalmist recommended… “Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.  This I declare about the Lord – HE ALONE is my refuge, my place of safety; He is my God AND I TRUST HIM… His faithful promises are your armor and protection… If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home.  For He will order His angels to protect you wherever you go…” And as if that wasn’t enough, then the Lord, Himself speaks…

“The Lord says, ‘I will rescue those who love me!  I will protect those who trust in my Name!  When they call on Me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble!  I will rescue and honor them! I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation!” (From Psalm 91NLT)

One more time… It pays to trust and serve the Lord in dangerous and difficult times!!  And should death come our way, those who trust the Lord are “safe in the arms of God!”

Error in “Necessary Food” Bible reading plan for May 27…

Notice to those using the “Necessary Food” Bible Reading plan I developed… There is an error in the Bible reading for today, May 27… Lamentations 1 was inadvertently omitted from the “Prophecy” reading for today. Here is my recommendation for resolving it: Read Lamentations 1:1-22 today and Lamentations 2:1-22 tomorrow and you should be ok… Sorry that happened!!! 😔

Claiming God’s Best – Entering His Covenant Blessings

The children of Israel… They were on the threshold of claiming God’s promises and entering into God’s covenant blessings… What an opportunity!!!  You wouldn’t want to do anything to mess that up!  What were the secrets?

Well that’s what Deuteronomy 6 is all about.  I don’t know if you’re following the “Necessary Food” Bible reading plan I developed and is available on this site, but if you are, Deuteronomy 6 is the Old Testament History reading for today.  Regardless, I encourage you to read the whole chapter and look for the principles it addresses for claiming God’s best and enjoying His covenant blessings…

Here they are (see if you can identify them in the passage)…

  • Love Him with all your heart, soul, might!  (“The greatest commandment – vs. 5)
  • Reverence Him!  [“Fear the Lord”]
  • Obey Him!
  • Serve Him!
  • Share His story [i.e. Pass on the legacy to the next generations]!

God’s promises are true!  His covenant is sure!  His blessings are abundant!  It seems to me that although, Deuteronomy 6 especially was addressed to the Children of Israel as they entered the “Promised Land.” Its principles apply to us if we are to claim, enjoy, and live in the fullness of New Covenant blessings provided through faith in Jesus Christ.
