Prayer For a Hurting World

I have to admit, sometimes when I see what is happening in the broader culture I almost despair… the moral drift, the ethical depravity, the spiritual bankruptcy!  I am tempted to say what the prophet Micah said centuries ago (that I read this morning during my devotions)…

“What misery is mine!  The faithful have been swept from the land!  Not one upright person remains!”  And then Micah describes in very graphic terms in the verses that follow the moral and spiritual condition of His nation (and where WE are headed so fast it is frightening). (Micah 7.1-6)

But then – in the midst of all of his despair – Micah focuses on the character of God!  He says…

“But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord!  I wait for God my Savior!  He will hear me!  Do not gloat over me, my enemy!  Though I have fallen, I will rise!  Though I sit in darkness, the Lord will be my light! … He will bring me out into the light; I will see His righteousness…

“Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives transgression?!  You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy.  You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea!”  (From Micah 7.8-20 NIV)

So here’s what I’m going to do…  I’m going to pray fervently (and continually) for a moral and spiritual renewal in America!  Then I’m going to remind myself of the righteous, merciful and gracious character of God… Who pardons sin and forgives transgression!  Therefore I have hope!!  Help us, O Lord!!

His “Last Words” – Hear and Heed!

We consider the “last words” of a significant person of influence very important.  We listen closely and seek to remember and pay close attention to what they say.  I recall vividly the “last words” of my mother as we, her family, were gathered around her deathbed.

The last words of Jesus Christ, our Savior, have much greater impact and importance! … However, they were not dying words – they were the words of a risen Lord, about to ascend to the Heavenly Father’s right hand, and uttered with the promise of one day returning to usher in and establish the eternal “Kingdom of God!”

Here they are (and very important!). We, His followers, must hear and heed them!

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses… to the ends of the earth!”

And when He had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.  And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said… ‘Why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven!’” (From Acts 1:8–11 ESV)

The “last words” of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior… “King of Kings and Lord of Lords!”  Oh, hear me!  I intend to do everything in my power to hear and heed them!  And, I’m excited about His promised return… It could be soon!
