Contemplating a move? Some wise counsel…

moving-dayWhat goes into making a good decision about a significant job change or relocation?  In my Bible reading this morning during “coffee with the Lord” I believe I discovered some helpful and  positive principles from Jacob’s life as he made the decision to leave Laban’s household and employment in Genesis 31…

First of all circumstances changed… but Jacob did not base his decision to move and leave Laban’s employment simply on circumstances…

“Now Jacob heard that the sons of Laban were saying, ‘Jacob has taken all that was our father’s, and from what was our father’s he has gained all this wealth.’  And Jacob saw that Laban did not regard him with favor as before.” (vss. 1-2)

Then Jacob, thought he heard God’s voice and direction clearly on the matter…

“Then the Lord said to Jacob, “Return to the land of your fathers and to your kindred, and I will be with you.” (vs. 3)

But, in the final  analysis Jacob did not act until he had confirmed what He believed God had said to him personally with his family (or, as in our case at times, trusted spiritual counselors and confidants)…

“So Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah…and said to them, “I see that your father does not regard me with favor as he did before… and he has cheated me and changed my wages ten times.  But God did not permit him to harm me… Then the angel of God said to me in a dream, ‘Jacob!’ and I said, ‘Here I am!  And he said, “I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.  I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me.  Now arise, go out from this land and return to  the land of your kindred.’ (from vss. 4-13)

“Then Rachel and Leah answered and said to him, … ‘Whatever God has said to  you, do it!” (from vss.14-16)

Based upon those things Jacob acted and initiated a move.

I think that presents a good and wise model for God-fearing, Christ-honoring believers today!  And much of it is reinforced by New Testament teaching… especially the  wisdom of James…

“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. 15 Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’” (James 4:13–15)

And wisdom from Proverbs in the  Bible…

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV)

Wise counsel, I think!

False Prophets… “Wolves in sheep’s clothing” – It’s not just their words, it’s their lives!

false-prophets“False prophets” – How destructive and damaging they are! They encourage false hopes, give a sense of artificial security, demean what is right and true, deceive the innocent, and attack and persecute those who are righteous… And there may be more that could be said about their false message! They claim to speak for God, but they are actually the mouthpiece of the Devil!

The temptation in identifying “false prophets” is to focus only on what they say – their message! The Bible addresses the characteristics and content of their message, to be sure. But in the “Sermon on the Mount” Jesus emphasized another, equally important (perhaps even more important) litmus test for identifying “false prophets” … their lifestyle… their behavior… their “fruit”!

Here it is in His own words… “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THEM BY THEIR FRUITS. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. THUS YOU WILL RECOGNIZE THEM BY THEIR FRUITS. (From Matthew 7:15–20 ESV)

Brings to mind something the writer of Hebrews had to say about those with a healthy, true message from God – True prophets! “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God! CONSIDER THE OUTCOME OF THEIR WAY OF LIFE, AND IMITATE THEIR FAITH. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever! (Hebrews 13:7–8 ESV)

In the plethora of messages that abound in our world today, it seems to me we would do well to heed the words and warning of Jesus! Don’t just examine the message of a self-proclaimed “prophet” – scrutinize and observe their life! Oh, and one more thing, you never go wrong following Jesus! He’s reliable on both counts – message and lifestyle! Follow Him… He’s “the same yesterday, today and forever!”

When it comes to choices with eternal consequences – be counterintuitive!

the-broad-and-narrow-way

Sometimes the right thing to do is what seem counterintuitive. Webster defines the word doing what is “contrary to what one would intuitively or naturally expect.” For example, some martial arts are built around taking advantage of an adversary’s aggression – actually using their force and momentum against an opponent, rather than resisting them. As someone who has lived many years where there is snow and ice on roadways, I can tell you that when driving on ice you steer into a skid, not against it, to bring your vehicle back under control. And I am sure there are other examples that many of you who are reading this could cite…

When it comes to life choices, the Bible recommends being counterintuitive… Can you imagine coming to a fork in the road… one road leads right and is wide, paved, smooth and inviting. The other road (if you want to call it that), leads left and is a narrow trail and appears challenging, difficult and a bit frightening. Which to choose?

What does the Bible say as it relates to life choices – choices with eternal, ultimate consequences?

“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. But the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

When it comes to eternal matters – choices about values, God, morality, and ultimate destinations, “everybody is doing it” does not commend itself as a wise choice – a smooth path probably is not best path. Who says so? Jesus says so and He’s the guy who “knows the end from the beginning.” If heaven is your home “easy going” and “situation ethics” and deferred decisions about eternal matters is probably not going to get you to heaven!

We face choices like this every day… two roads… choose wisely… On this one your best decision is probably to be “counterintuitive!”
