Three analogies that lead to effectiveness in Christian service

I don’t know about you, but I want to be an effective “servant of the Lord!” I want the phrase that Apostle Paul used to describe himself to be true of me… “a servant (slave) of Jesus Christ.” There is no higher honor, no greater mission, no tasks more noble! I desperately want to hear Jesus say of me, “Well done good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord!”

How can this happen? This morning during my time of “Coffee with the Lord” I read a passage that presents 3 analogies that characterize a “servant of the Lord” who is effective in Christian service (2 Timothy 2:1-7). Here are the analogies (almost a sermon starter, but I want them to be more than that – I want them to guide and motivate my life personally!)

1. Be like a devoted soldier – willing to suffer and do whatever is necessary to fulfill the mission

2. Be like a disciplined athlete – who trains hard to win and competes according to the rules

3. Be like a diligent farmer – who works hard to maximize the harvest

And the passage this was based upon…

“You then, my child [Timothy], be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men [or women] who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.” (2 Timothy 2:1-7 ESV)

A pure heart is even more important than pure water!

Pure water

These days we are very conscious about the purity of our drinking water. It is not uncommon to ask the question, “Where did this drinking water come from? What is the source?” In fact, as a young man, we never were very concerned about that when hiking in the mountains. Just yesterday, however, on a hike in the Rockies in Western Montana we took along bottles of water with a purification unit in them to purify water in the streams for drinking. A little pollutant – a small toxic source – in drinking water cause disease and even be deadly. And the tragedy is, that small toxic source of pollution often wreaks havoc for an entire village, city, or region! What ought to produce health and vitality – what ought to refresh and bring fruitfulness – instead diseases, diminishes and even brings death!

I thought of that this morning as I read the following verse of Scripture during “coffee with the Lord”…

The inspired writer of Proverbs warned, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow all the springs of life.“ (Proverbs 4:23)

It’s true… My “heart” (my attitudes – the spiritual center and wellspring of my life) not only has the power to bring life, refreshment, vitality and fruitfulness to me. When it is poisoned with toxic attitudes and cultural and spiritual pollutants it can produce spiritual, emotional, and physical disease… it can even lead to destruction and death (physically and spiritually). What is more, the toxic condition of my heart has the potential of polluting entire organizations, neighborhoods, congregations and webs of friends… Perhaps the pollution can even influence and impact cities, regions and nations!

Oh what a challenge… “Keep your heart with all vigilance!” I want a pure heart and God has the power to cleanse and purify them! But more than that, with the help of the Holy Spirit, the cleansing power of the blood of Jesus shed for my sin and yours on the cross (1 John 1:7-9), and our personal vigilance (i.e. our attention to personal spiritual hygiene) our hearts can be kept pure! And keep this in mind: the impact of that will not only be felt personally – it has the power to influence a great many others!

The highway to heaven is like a long road trip through the dark of night… but I see light on the horizon!

As a young family with children I can remember some long road trips from Texas to Montana. We’d leave in the evening and drive all night! Those nights became very long for the driver! Everyone sleeping… long hours of darkness… the boredom of the road… the temptation to doze off… and yet the awareness that for the sake of the family I had to stay awake and alert… When would morning come?! When would we reach our destination?! And then the first signs of day would appear… a faint glow on the horizon… Dawn of a new day!!

I thought of that this morning as I read these words from Proverbs…

“The path of the righteous is like the first light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day! But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness – they do not know over what they stumble.” (Proverbs 5:18-19)

The road to heaven (where there is no night – Revelation 22:5) is a long one – a challenging one and at times a very difficult one. We often feel like we’re traveling through a deep darkness with only the headlights of God’s word to guide us (Psalm 119:105). But then “the signs of the times” point to a brighter day… there is the glow of glory on the horizon! Our spirits quicken! Hope arises in our hearts! The full light of day is almost here and our heavenly home awaits us! Travel on my friend… travel on!!!
