How to please and bring pleasure to your parents right out of the Bible…

Father and son Mother and child

Do you love and respect your parents (whether by birth or adoption)?  Do you want to please them and do something to pleasure them?  I hope so!

Here’s how you can do that straight out of the Bible…

“My child, if your heart is wise, my own heart will rejoice!  Everything in me will celebrate when you speak what is right.  Don’t envy sinners, but fear the Lord [i.e. reverence Him] all the days of your life!  You will be rewarded for this!  Your hope will not be disappointed!”  (Proverbs 23:15–18 from the New Living Translation)

My parents have died and are now with the Lord… But I can tell you this is what would make them very happy and what would please them.  I intend to live my life this way!  And a hint to my children if they are reading this… More than anything else on planet earth… more than any gift you could give me… what this passage says is what would bring this parent pleasure!  Just say’n 🙂

I’m convinced we tend to completely misunderstand what the Bible calls “the Lord’s discipline!”

After reading Hebrews 12:3-17 this morning I’m convinced that most of us completely misunderstand what the Bible calls “the Lord’s discipline!”
Default, we tend to think of it only as punishment for something wrong – some sin we have committed! That is a very limiting and one-sided understanding of the phrase! In fact, it ends up distorting the Biblical understanding of the phrase!
From a Biblical perspective, “the Lord’s discipline” would be anything the Lord allows to come our way to develop us, to strengthen us, to foster holiness in our lives, make us more like Jesus, and prepare us for heaven! You could call it “character development” or “divine discipleship.” It’s akin to the training a world-class athlete goes through to win in competition – the hours of training to produce the excellence of symphonic master – the mentoring and coaching an artisan experiences on his/her way to create a masterpiece. It can be unpleasant at times – incredibly challenging – but it is necessary, even essential. God’s word declares that it is motivated by our Heavenly Father’s love, not His anger!
Here’s the passage to describes and defines it…
“Have you forgotten the exhortation where God addresses you as sons? ‘My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor be weary when reproved by Him. For the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.’ It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed.”
So my prayer today… Heavenly Father help me align my understanding of Your “discipline” so it matches your heart and purposes for my life! You’re more interested in my “holiness” and character development than anything else! You’re working with me now to make me more effective and Christlike and to prepare me for heaven in the future. Help me understand that everything – yes EVERYTHING – that you allow to come my way is a part of your loving plan to help me achieve these things! May my words mirror those of your “beloved Son”… “Not my will, but thine be done!”

Thanks to everyone encouraging me on in my “faith-race” … especially Jesus!

Cheering Jesus cheering us on
I’ve run several marathons… each one was unique, each had it challenges, each one was LONG! And it really helps to have some people along the way cheering you on… especially if some of them have run races like your’s before! But when you approach the finish line, with your muscles screaming and your body telling you you’re NOT going to make it, you really want to see that one special friend or spouse at the end there to meet you!

Following Jesus is not a sprint… It’s a marathon! And each one of us face unique challenges as we seek to finish “our race” (and the fact is we’re not running against each other… each of us is running “our race”). Sometimes we wonder if we’ll make it – the difficulties and trials seem so great! We’re tempted to pull over to the side, give up and just take the “sag wagon” without finishing. But thankfully there are fellow runners that cheer us on, those who have finished their faith race successfully and have gone on before whose words of encouragement we remember (the heavenly grandstands are filled with them!)… and then there is Jesus! The One above all else we want to see at the finish line… Our Savior… The One who with His dying breath proclaimed from the cross “IT IS FINISHED!” (John 19:30)

So at the end of the great faith chapter (Hebrews 11) – a chapter filled with the names and stories of fellow runners, who finished their “faith-race” (overcoming all kinds of challenges, accomplishing great things despite the difficulties – even giving their all to finish their race)… We find these words…

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God!” (from Hebrews 12:1–2 ESV)

I’m gonna keep on running! I really appreciate the encouragement that comes from each of you, my fellow runners! And, oh how the lives of faithful people who have gone before encourage me to continue on! … But most of all Jesus! …Jesus encourages me! And, oh I want to see Him at the finish line cheering me across the finish line… more than anything else!!!
