The Collateral Benefits of Trials… “No pain – no gain”

Struggle

Collateral benefits!  A person decides to work out daily and discovers they begin to have greater stamina for their activities and work throughout the day.  A disciplined weight loss program not only results in improved appearance, but borderline diabetes improves and activities that were once a tremendous effort become easier!  The effort and discipline expended, although painful and unpleasant, was worth it!  How does the adage go? … “No pain – no gain!”

Much better than any adage, however, is Biblical truth!  Here’s what the Bible says about the “collateral benefit” of trials that we may face if we respond to them correctly…

“Count it all joy, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.  And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”  (James 1:2–4 ESV)

Just this morning I had a bit of a struggle with some trials… They were nothing compared with some I have faced.  It’s good to know though, that God is at work in them all to produce the collateral benefit of character…  Steadfastness (or endurance), spiritual maturity, completeness, and ultimately “lacking nothing!”  Sounds good to me – the collateral benefits of trials!  Lord, help me to cooperate with you in the trials that come my way.  Your work within my life through the trials you allow is worth the pain!

Spiritual and moral danger is everywhere! Can we excuse our non-involvement?

warning danger

Someone we pass during the day is in danger, has an emergency, or is clearly facing a crisis. Will we stop and warn them? Will we do something to intervene? Will we help? Periodically we hear the sad news reports of individuals who were facing situations like this and neighbors or passersby choosing not to get involved or help those in crisis or danger. The excuses given are many, but one recurring flimsy, pathetic excuse is “I didn’t know! – I didn’t realize!” Makes you wonder…

It’s bad when it involves physical danger… It’s equally bad (or worse) when it involves spiritual danger! Spiritual crisis or danger has consequences not only for time, but for eternity! Christians who have experienced the love and “salvation” (i.e. the rescue) of God have responsibilities at both levels! And it is inexcusable for us to offer lame excuses like “I didn’t realize!”

I thought about that today as I had my time of “coffee with the Lord” and read the following passage…

“Rescue those who are being taken away to death! Hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter! If you say, ‘Behold, I did not know this,’ does not He who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not He who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?” (from Proverbs 24:11–12 ESV) Reminds me of two other passages worth reading and contemplating: Ezekiel 3:16-27 and 33:1-20)

God holds us accountable! Oh Lord, help me to be alert to the signs of crisis and danger all around me! May I not offer flimsy, lame excuses for not getting involved! May I do what I can as a Christian to offer warning, intervention and rescue! There are no excuses for failing to get involved, LeRoy! No excuses!

Preparation, planning and resources can only get you so far… You’ll still need the Lord’s help in the battles you face…

Preparation, planning and resources can only get you so far… You’ll still need the Lord’s help in the battles you face…

Read this in the Bible during “Coffee with the Lord” this morning… The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh had valiant men who carried shield and sword, and drew the bow, expert in war, 44,760, able to go to war.  They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.  And when they prevailed over them, the Hagrites and all who were with them were given into their hands, FOR THEY CRIED OUT TO GOD IN THE BATTLE, AND HE GRANTED THEIR URGENT PLEA BECAUSE THEY TRUSTED IN HIM!  (from 1 Chronicles 5:18–20 ESV)
