In troubled times… You’ve got to pray and then just trust the Lord!

trusting-god-in-troubled-timesIf you are like me, after watching the evening news (or other general programming on television), you nearly despair at the state of affairs in the broader culture. On every hand we see values that are warped and twisted, attitudes that are bitter and hate-filled, unbridled expressions of lust and violence, a political climate that is poisoned and polarized. To top it off, those who are seeking to live by biblical standards of belief and conduct are treated with suspicion and labeled “extreme” (even dangerous).

So yesterday, during “coffee with the Lord” early in the morning I read a passage in Isaiah that addressed a similar time in the nation of Israel. Embedded in the passage was a message of hope! And a suggestion for prayer in times like those that I’ve described above. The Passage? Isaiah 33. In fact, I jotted these words in the margin of my Bible… “When times are bad, pray this…

“Oh, Lord, be gracious to us; we wait for you! Be our strong arm every morning, our salvation in the time of trouble!”

Then the acknowledgement of Who, this God of ours is…

“The Lord is exalted, for He dwells on high; he will fill Zion [the nation] with justice and righteousness! He will be the stability of our times!”

And then the voice of God speaks with authority into those troubled times…

“Now I will arise,’ says the Lord! ‘Now I will lift Myself up; now I will be exalted!’”

(From Isaiah 33)

It brought to mind an old gospel song…

“In times like these you need a Savior,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!
“In times like these you need the Bible,
In times like these, O be not idle;
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!
“In times like these I have a Savior,
In times like these I have an anchor;
I’m very sure, I’m very sure
My anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

Refrain…
“This Rock is Jesus, Yes He’s the One!
This Rock is Jesus, the only One!
Be very sure, be very sure,
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!”

Me first! It’s not the Bible way!

me-firstIn a “me first world” I think it’s wise to remember what Apostle Paul taught us…

  • Don’t quarrel over your personal opinions.
  • Don’t argue over your personal scruples.
  • Some things are just between a particular person and the Lord.
  • But keep in mind that your personal decisions and practices influence and impact the lives of others, positively or negatively…
  • And bottom line… Each of us will give an account of himself or herself to God!

Hey, it’s in the Bible! … Romans 14:1-12  Read it for yourself!

High time to wake up!

wake-up-with-a-startEvery person’s worst nightmare! I had a very important appointment… had it on my calendar (a 15 minute reminder on Outlook). It was the kind of appointment that needed some time for preparation. Days had been usual, “same-o’ – same-o’” – kind of boring. On the day of the “big deal” I got up, was puttering around the house … and suddenly “ding” went my Outlook reminder on my cell phone! I picked it up and looked in horror … 15 minutes before the “big deal”!!!

Ring a bell with anyone? Ever have a similar experience?

Reminded me of what I read in the Bible this morning during “coffee with the Lord”…

“You know the time! The hour has come for you to wake from sleep! Salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed! The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.” (From Romans 13:11–14 ESV)

Big appointment for us on God’s calendar! He sent an invitation via the Heavenly Outlook… I accepted it. It’s really near – the signs are there (read the prophetic Scriptures that point to it). Don’t want to fall into “Spiritual same-o’ – same-o’!” Need to stay alert, awake, prepared and ready! Don’t want to let up on sustaining a godly lifestyle – don’t want to slip, slide, and fall into sin! Want to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make no provision for the flesh [the natural self, influenced and controlled by sinful desires] to gratify its desires!”

Hey, the “trumpet call of God” (1 Thessalonians 4: 16-17) could sound today! … Ready?
