You can’t fool Mom! … Kinda like “You can’t fool God!”

Dennis - You can't fool Mom
I guess the best analogy for today’s post in “Coffee with the Lord” is probably “Mom” – yes, that’s right, “Mom” (and perhaps, depending on your experience at home, “Dad”). Not at our house though when our kids were growing up… it was “Mom!” (I was the “pushover!). Our kids couldn’t hide anything from my wife, she’d find out – It was like she had “eyes in the back of her head” or “God told her” or something. When my wife “cross-examined” the kids, they were in trouble! I’d joke she should have been a federal prosecutor! One question after another in rapid fire until the truth came out!

That’s right… “Mom!” Couldn’t fool her – she’d find out – but oh how she loved her kids! That combination of not being able to fool her and passionate concern and love is what makes the analogy for today’s post work… It’s a lot like God, our Heavenly Father – you can’t fool Him either – Hypocrisy (living a lie) doesn’t work with Him! Yet His love for us is strong, deep, and dependable (the Hebrew word for it is “Hesed”) – our best interests, as His children, is His greatest concern and purpose!

Here’s what I read about it this morning in my Bible during “Coffee with the Lord”…

“He [Jesus] began to say to His disciples, ‘Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees [who were extremely outwardly religious] which is hypocrisy! Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known… I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more that they can do. But I warn you whom to fear: fear Him [God] who, after he has kiiled, has authority to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him! Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God! Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered! Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows!’” (from Luke 12:1-7)

There it is… accountability to God and the deep love of the Heavenly Father! Hypocrisy won’t work with Him – you can’t fool Him – He knows everything, even what we think are secret things! And yet, out of His great heart of love, he is cares for us, and our welfare is His greatest concern!… Like I said, kinda like “Mom!” I love and “fear” Him at the same time! I know He loves me! I want to please Him don’t you?

The heart and prayer of a true Spiritual leader!

Praying pastorI just love Apostle Paul’s letter to the believers in Philippi in the Bible – we call it Philippians.  It is an incredibly intimate letter – an example of an ancient “letter of friendship” – it just oozes affection, love and concern.  In my opinion in it Paul expresses the heart of a true Spiritual leader – the heart of a pastor!  In it you find expressed the concerned heart of a Spiritual father and the nurturing impulses of a mother combined.  A perfect example of that is found in the opening passage of the book (1:3-11)…

Here’s my paraphrase of a few phrases from the passage…

  • “I thank God every time you come to mind”…
  • “Every prayer of mine for you is made with joy”…
  • “It is right for me to feel the way I do about you – you are dear to me, you are always in my heart!”

And Paul’s prayer for them?  It oozes thankfulness and joy!  It is saturated with the confidence that what God began among them collectively (and within them personally) would be fulfilled.  Paul’s gratitude for their ongoing partnership with him over the years in the Lord’s work is unmistakable.  But more than anything else the heart of this Spiritual leader (with the combined impulses of Spiritual father and mother) desires and prays for their Spiritual maturity, stability, growth, vitality and fruitfulness!  The heartbeat of a true Spiritual leader I tell you!

Listen, if you’ve ever had a pastor who cared for you like that, you are fortunate!  They are to be honored and esteemed!  They care for your soul (check out Hebrews 13:17) and just about every other aspect of your life as a Christ follower!  I think they would give up their very lives for the welfare of those they lead!  Two really great pastors – Spiritual leader like this in my life as a have been Pastor Leon Mitchell (my pastor as a boy growing up in Ronan, MT) and Philip Wannemacher (my pastor in graduate school in Springfield, MO)!  Who comes to you mind that fits that profile?

I couldn’t resist… Here is the Philippians passage from the New Living Translation… read it with relish and savor every word!

“Every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God!  Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy, for you have been my partners in spreading the Good News about Christ from the time you first heard it until now.  I am certain that God, who began the good work within [or among] you, will continue His work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.  So it is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a special place in my heart! You share with me the special favor of God, both in my imprisonment and in defending and confirming the truth of the Good News.  God knows how much I love you and long for you with the tender compassion of Christ Jesus!  I pray that your love will overflow more and more, and that you will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding.  For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.  May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.”

Don’t you want to be a Spiritual leader like that?  Aren’t you grateful for those who live out those qualities?

Apostolic advice for perilous times…

Coming Storm

I’ve had several conversations the past several days and in each conversation the topic eventually came around to how bad things are – how evil the times are in which we live.  Nothing has changed from the time of Apostle Paul!  Christians in the first century faced many of the same challenges we do!  That’s why Paul gave followers of Christ in the first century the advice he did in Ephesians 5:15-21 (you should read it in your Bible today!)

Here’s my personal summary and paraphrase of Paul’s advice for “times like this”…. (Check it out yourself – see if I’ve treated what Paul had to say fairly)

  1. Be careful – very careful – about the way you live your life as a Christian in times like this!
  2. Make the most of every opportunity God gives you!
  3. Understand God’s will for your life (and do it)!
  4. Stay full of the Holy Spirit – constantly nurture and respond to His presence in your life!
  5. Build up (“edify”) one another with worship (personal and corporate)!
  6. Maintain a life full of gratitude to God for everything!
  7. Highly regard each other’s unique and important roles in Christ!

Hey, I agree that the times in which we live are evil!  I believe Apostle Paul’s advice in this passage is well taken… Gonna work on applying it to my life… today, and tomorrow, and the next day, “until He (Christ) returns!”
