“I’ve learned the secret!” Apostle Paul

The SecretI’m not going to say much about today’s passage from the epistles that I read this morning. Going to let the Scripture speak for itself. I will say this much… Sometimes comparing Scripture with Scripture yields rich results! Think about what you’ll read in the next few moments! (One more thing… What I read this morning leaves me in awe of the Apostle Paul – what a secret! What a lesson he learned!”

Philippians 4:11–13 (ESV)
“I HAVE LEARNED IN WHATEVER SITUATION I AM TO BE CONTENT. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned THE SECRET of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I CAN DO ALL THINGS THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME!” (Philippians 4:11-13)

“I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice! (Philippians 1:12–18)

“Whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches.” (II Corinthians 11:21-28)

Live life like someone left the gate open!

Enjoy lifeA common objection I hear from people faced with the decision to become a Christ follower is, “I’d have to give up too much! Christians just have so much they can’t do! There are just too many restrictions!”

Here’s what the Apostle Paul had to say on that subject… (I read it in the Bible just this morning – pay attention to the words I’ve emphasized by putting them in all caps)

“Finally, WHATEVER is true, WHATEVER is honorable, WHATEVER is just, WHATEVER is pure, WHATEVER is lovely, WHATEVER is commendable, if there is ANY excellence, if there is ANYTHING worthy of praise, think about these things!” (from Philippians 4:8)

Doesn’t sound like a life of unhappy, dour, restriction to me! Sounds like your “dream life!” Keep the best – throw out the garbage! Find the good, the positive, the uplifting, the constructive and enjoy it to the hilt!

Admittedly a person can’t have it both ways.. the destructive, the demeaning, the dilatory, the diseased, the damning, the deadly and what Paul recommends! But who wants to? I don’t know about you, but I’m into the eternal, not a dead end! Hey choose wisely! Jesus is the One who declared, “I have come that they might have life and have it abundantly!” It’s the other guy, that “comes only to rob, kill and destroy!” (John 10:10)

Facing difficult circumstances? A God-given perspective will help!

Prison Epistles

Devoted followers of Jesus are incredible people who have and sustain a positive perspective on life and the circumstances they face in life! I’ve met them and so have you… incredible trials, great suffering, unjust accusations, great persecution; but exhibiting faith, hope, love, joy, peace, a grateful spirit and contentment through it all!

Apostle Paul was that kind of Christian! I read a passage from his letter to the Philippians during my time of “coffee with the Lord” this morning that exhibits those qualities. The words Paul wrote have a wonderful message in and of themselves… But they pack an even more powerful impact when you consider the circumstances from which they were written! Unjustly imprisoned for the Gospel of Christ, chained to Roman guards 24 hours a day, unable to travel and minister to the needs of Christians and churches that he loved, having to deal with the insincere motives of some carnal Christian leaders, and facing impending death… And from that situation and those circumstances he writes to Christians in Philippi and says…
“Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate [or “magnanimous”… look it up!] in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon! Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything! Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand! His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (from Philippians 4:4–7 The New Living Translation)

Perspective! Paul had a divine perspective on life! That’s what I want! God gives it! Apostle Paul exhibited it… But he’s not the only one! I’ve watched some wonderful Christians demonstrate it too in all kinds of incredibly difficult circumstances! I want to live with that kind of grace and goodness, don’t you?
