A Perfect Church? Dream on!

The perfect churchIf you’re a part of a congregation led by a true Spiritual leader you are blessed! Authentic Spiritual leaders comfort – but they also confront! The churches they lead are not perfect (their pews are filled with “sinners saved by grace” and “recovering hypocrites”)! These leaders are authentic, loving, caring and concerned. More than anything else they want to see the spiritual progress of those they lead as they seek to see them “conformed [personally and collectively] into the image of Christ!”

Can you imagine how Paul, the great apostle, felt about the congregation in Corinth – a church in which he had invested time, energy, prayer, concern and tears? He saw himself as an apostle – but as more – a spiritual “father!”

If you thought the believers in Corinth had to be a nearly perfect congregation because of Paul’s apostolic ministry and leadership – dream again! Here is a body of believers that tore Paul’s heart out! Perfect congregations are RARE (in fact they DON’T EXIST this side of Heaven, because of US!) Pastoring at its best is like parenting – and even the best children aren’t perfect!

So today, this is what I read, about the congregation in Corinth, from Apostle Paul…

“We tell you this as Christ’s servants, and with God as our witness… EVERYTHING WE DO, DEAR FRIENDS, IS TO STRENGTHEN YOU! For I am afraid that when I come I won’t like what I find, and you won’t like my response. I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior. Yes, I am afraid that when I come again… I will be grieved because many of you have not given up your old sins. You have not repented of your impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure.” (From 2 Corinthians 12:19–21 NLT)

Ouch!!! That’s pastoring… and that’s the heart of a true spiritual leader! Listen, if you’ve got a pastor who loves you, who cares about you, who prays for you, who comforts – but also confronts you and pushes you to be more like Jesus in the power of the Holy Spirit, you’re blessed! Pray for your pastor, encourage and support them, listen and respond to God’s truth expressed through their lives!

A spiritual secret… “My grace is enough – My power works best in weakness!”

A hand on the shoulderHere’s a spiritual secret … God sometimes allows painful, unpleasant things to happen to us and come our way (even remain – without delivering us) to display the marvel of His enabling grace in our lives and prove that His power works best in human weakness!

Apostle Paul experienced it… I read about it this morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” … He experienced a “thorn in his flesh” and said, “Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away.  Each time He said to me, ‘My grace is all you need!  My power works best in weakness’… that’s why I rejoice in my weakness, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ.  For when I am weak, then I am strong!” (From 2 Corinthians 12:7b-10 NLT)

One of the hardest things for an excellent mentor (or loving parent) to do is stand back, let the protégé, son or daughter, wrestle with an issue, and [after all the life-lessons] allow them to struggle with an issue or challenge, and with assured presence and encouraging words, demonstrate they can handle it!  That’s just a lot like what God does… His word to guide us, His Spirit to empower us, and His presence to encourage us, as we face trials He allows to come our way… NOT delivering us, but “gracing” us, empowering us, and encouraging us!  God’s power displayed through human weakness… and the result?  God glorified!  “When I am weak, then am I strong!”

Good News… We have a Covenant Keeping God!

Covenant Keeping GodHere’s good news for us all… God keeps His sacred covenant regardless of human failure!  He is true to Himself!  His character – His “DNA – Divine Nature Attribute” – is TRUTH!  He cannot deny Himself (TRUTH is who He is – inviolably, essentially, who He is… “I AM that I AM”)!

Here is His declaration in the face of the miserable failures of His people in the Old Testament…

“This is what the Lord says; ‘If you can break my covenant with the day and the night so that one does not follow the other, only then will my covenant be broken! … And as the stars of the sky cannot be counted and the sand on the seashore cannot be measured, so I will multiply the descendants of my servant David… I would no more reject my people than I would change my laws that govern night and day, earth and sky!” (From Jeremiah 33:17-26 NLT)

Aren’t you glad God keeps His promises – honors His covenant – regardless!  “He cannot deny Himself!” (2 Timothy 2:11-13 ESV)
