The Signs of the Times…

I don’t know about you, but I regularly get notifications about weather on my smartphone that are accurate about coming storms within minutes of their arrival!  It’s incredible what technology has been able to accomplish and predict about the weather!  If people are not careful, however, what science and technology can accomplish becomes a “god” … Do you recognize this phrase at all? … “We follow science!”

Yet there are other “signs” – important ones, critical ones – that are completely ignored!

Jesus – the Messiah, the Son of God – addressed that issue!  I read the account of it in the Bible this morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord!”

Jesus addressed the religious leaders of His time who approached him skeptically”… “The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.  He answered and said to them, ‘When it is evening you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red; and in the morning, It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.  Hypocrites!  You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times!  A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah’” (From Mattew 16:1-5)  (Cp. Matthew 12:38-40 where Jesus indicates His resurrection would be a sign even greater to His age than Jonah’s miraculous deliverance from death – Jonah 2).

Listen, technology and science may help predict a coming storm, but God is the one who understands the “signs of the times” – the “last days” – and the approaching end of time.  Yet many scorn the signs God has given in Scripture, and seek simply weak, ill-advised, human solutions to the moral and spiritual problems of our world.  Let me tell you, I’ll take God’s analysis of “the coming storm” over human strategies to deal with them any time (cp. 2 Peter 3:1-15a for example)!  The Almighty, Creator God of heaven and earth, knows what He is doing – not mere human ingenuity!  He knows “the end from the beginning!”

A Timely Repost… Please Read it!

A member of “Coffee with the Lord,” Nancy Sinclair, reminded me today of a post I wrote on this date in 2015 by reposting it. This morning again Psalm 10 was a part of my Bible reading. In light of the situation in Ukraine, because of the unjustified and evil aggression of Russia, I decided to repost it…

“I’m frustrated… I admit it! It angers me to see evil win – to see violent people arrogantly take advantage of good people and destroy the innocent and children! Right now it is ISIS or ISIL – but through human history there have been repeated expressions of this degraded and despicable evil! In fact, there may be an expression of it to some degree just down the street from you, in a supervisor where you work, or somewhere in your community. Oppressive, arrogant, evil can be found anywhere!

“I read about it this morning in the Bible! The Psalmist prayed about it… and after reading what he had to say about it in his prayer, I decided to make his words my own… (I warn you… what he had to say was in many respects unvarnished…)

“Why, LORD, do you stand far off?! Why do you pay no attention during times of trouble?! The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed; the oppressed are trapped by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up. Yes, the wicked man boasts because he gets what he wants; the one who robs others curses and rejects the LORD. The wicked man is so arrogant he always thinks, ‘God won’t hold me accountable; he doesn’t care.’ … He says to himself, ‘I will never be upended, I will experience no calamity!” His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words; his tongue injures and destroys. He waits in ambush near the villages; in hidden places he kills the innocent. His eyes look for some unfortunate victim… He says to himself, ‘God overlooks it; he does not pay attention; he never notices.’

“Rise up, LORD! O God, strike him down! Do not forget the oppressed! … You have taken notice, for you always see one who inflicts pain and suffering! The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; you deliver the fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked and evil man! Hold him accountable for his wicked deeds, which he thought you would not discover. You rule forever! … LORD, you have heard the request of the oppressed; you make them feel secure because you listen to their prayer. You defend the fatherless and oppressed, so that mere mortals may no longer terrorize them!” (from Psalm 10 the NET Bible)

“Yes I prayed it! I prayed it passionately! And I believe God heard my prayer!”

A Wonderful Call to Worship!!

I’m a visual guy I guess… When I read the following words this morning from Psalm 9 I imagined a person standing up on Sunday morning in a worship service (Sunday is incidentally two days away) and using verses 1-2 as “a call to worship” … I saw that person in a loud, dramatic, and animated way proclaiming the following…

“I will praise You, O Lord, with my WHOLE HEART!  I will tell of your MARVELOUS WORKS!  I will be GLAD and REJOICE in You!  I will SING PRAISE to Your name, O MOST HIGH!!!”

Now, you could also make that “call to worship” collective as well by simply making the personal pronoun collective… “WE will praise You, O Lord with OUR WHOLE HEART! …”

Can you imagine an entire sports stadium declaring those words at the top of their lungs and the explosive expression that would follow (I’m “Pentecostal” after all!)?  Wouldn’t it be wonderful – nearly “Heavenly!”  Forget waiting until Sunday… I’d love to do it right now!!!  (I am in my heart – but I don’t want to disturb the neighbors!)  Oh let’s Praise the Lord!  He’s worthy of it!!!
