The Lord… My Shepherd!

A reflection on my Bible reading from the Psalms today (a repost)…

Have you ever pictured yourself as a “sheep in the Good Shepherd’s flock” and the Lord as the shepherd over the flock you’re a part of?  That is the unstated assumption of the 23rd Psalm you know!  Come on, use your imagination – picture yourself as one of the sheep of His flock… and Him as your shepherd – the “Good Shepherd” (John 10… read it!)  I did this morning!!  Incredibly uplifting! Wonderfully peace bringing!  Let the pic I’ve posted make it live in your mind…

Listen, if you know Jesus, you’re one of the sheep in His flock … not the only one, but one of the “sheep” in His flock that is important to Him.  In fact, Luke’s gospel declares that if you, or any of the other sheep, would go astray He’d put everything else aside to seek you and find them (or you)! (Luke 15:1-8)  The 23rd Psalm declares He provides for those who are a part of His flock, He leads them, satisfies their deepest hunger and thirst, He heals their wounds, walks with them through the valleys as dark as death, is their security and protector, and causes abundant lifelong blessing to come their way.  In fact, being a part of the Lord’s flock has as its benefit blessings that never end… in this life AND the life to come!

Here it is… A well-known, Bible favorite: Psalm 23 ESV

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.  He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.  Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.  You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever!”

Blown Away By God’s Grace and Favor!

I’ve been blessed and honored way beyond what I deserve!  Perhaps you feel like I do about that!

I remember receiving an honor several years ago from the denomination of which I am a part, choking up with emotion, and thinking… there are so many other people who are even more worthy of this than I am!  One of my mentors and teachers was in the audience that day, and if I could have, I would have run over to him and given him the award!  I just felt that way!  I’ve been so graciously and mercifully blessed!

I read a psalm this morning that deals with this issue that moved me deeply!  King David was taken from the sheepfold, was selected by God to replace Saul, was anointed by Samuel, and then in spite of his humble beginning was divinely honored and gifted to lead God’s flock, Israel!  What an honor!  What a gracious blessing!  God is the One who made him great!

Here’s it is in Psalm 21

“O Lord, in Your strength the king rejoices, and in Your salvation how greatly he exults!  You have given him his heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of his lips.  For You meet him with rich blessings; You set a crown of fine gold upon his head.  He asked life of You; You gave it to him, length of days forever and ever.  His glory is great through Your salvation!  Splendor and majesty You bestow on him.  For You make him most blessed forever; You make him glad with the joy of Your presence.  For the king trusts in the Lord, and through the steadfast love of the Most High he shall not be moved! … Be exalted, O Lord, in Your strength! We will sing and praise Your power.” (English Standard Version)

So here I am again today, blown away by blessings and honor the Lord has sent my way – so undeserved!  So overwhelmed by God’s grace and favor!! Thank you Lord!  Thank you!!

What is Faith… And the Principles that Guide Its Expression

Several years ago in my study of Hebrews 11 I developed the following definition of “faith” and the principles that govern it appropriate expression. I trust it will be a blessing to you!

Definition of “Faith”

Faith is confidence in God… trusting His character, believing and obeying His word, embracing His promises, following His leadership, and drawing upon his encouragement and strength.
