A Sense of Mission… Jesus Had It!

I admire a person with a sense of mission, purpose, calling and destiny! Don’t you? Their life is not wasted on “fooling around!” Every day matters! Everything is pointed toward a significant destiny!

This morning during my time of “Coffee with the Lord” I read of the declared mission of Jesus Christ early in His ministry… It goes like this in your Bible – Luke 4:16-21

“And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and He stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “TODAY THIS SCRIPTURE HAS BEEN FULFILLED IN YOUR HEARING!”

Jesus applied the inspired prophetic message of Isaiah 61:1-3 to Himself! He saw Himself as the Divinely appointed fulfillment of its words! It was His mission… His purpose… His calling and destiny! He spent the remainder of His life fulfilling those words – every day – every hour of every day! It was who He was!

So at the beginning of His ministry He declared, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing!'” And at the end of His ministry on earth He declared, “IT IS FINISHED!” (John 19:30) WOW! What a powerful moment in human history, His unveiling as Messiah – but more than that, what an incredible mission!!!

I acknowledge the mission of Jesus Christ was unique! But we have the high and holy privilege of sharing in it! At the close of His life Jesus did this… “Jesus spoke to His disciples again, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you!’ Then He breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit!” (John 20:21-22). Hear me, I’m so honored to share in His redemptive mission! And I’m incredibly grateful for the Holy Spirit’s power He provides to fulfill it!
