We live in a culture often driven by greed and materialistic pursuits – a culture with values filled with real risks for authentic, devoted followers of Christ! Against that background I read these wise and inspired words from Apostle Paul during my time of “Coffee with the Lord”…
A WARNING TO BE HEEDED: Be alert to the risks of materialism, greed, and love of money!
“Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desire that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evils! It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves through with many pangs… Flee these things!”
A BLESSING TO BE EXPERIENCED: The blessings of godliness with contentment!
“Godliness with contentment is great gain! … If we have food and clothing, with these we will be content! … Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith love steadfastness and gentleness! Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called”
THE CHALLENGE TO THOSE BLESSED WITH WEALTH: To practice generous stewardship with the resources God provides:
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy! They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed!”
