I thought of the nation I love and am concerned about when I read Jeremiah 18.7-10 this morning:
“If at any time I [God] declare concerning a nation or a kingdom, that I will pluck up and break down and destroy it, and if that nation, concerning which I have spoken, turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I intended to do to it…
“…and if at any time I declare concerning a nation or a kingdom that I will build and plant it, and if it does evil in my sight, not listening to my voice, then I will relent of the good that I had intended to do to it.
… Or at another moment I might speak concerning a nation or concerning a kingdom to build up or to plant it; if it does evil in My sight by not obeying My voice, then I will think better of the good with which I had promised to bless it.”
“Therefore… the Lord says, “Return, every one of you from his evil way, and amend your ways and your deeds!” (From Jeremiah 18:7-11 ESV)
I didn’t say it… It’s a message God spoke through Jeremiah, the prophet, concerning Judah. And it was fulfilled in the painful experience of the Babylonian exile. And it is a message that applies to our nation as well! Which will we choose – the mercy of God or the judgment of God? I am praying we will choose His mercy!
