A Reminder: Have you prayed for persecuted Christians in our world today?

Pray for the Persecuted

Periodically, I post a reminder in “Coffee with the Lord” to remember and pray for persecuted Christians. I have told this story elsewhere, but it bears repeating…

Several years ago I was invited to conduct a seminar in Amman, Jordan for church leaders from various Muslim countries in the Middle East on the topic “Spirit Empowered and Led Ministry.” Had about 100 who participated. I noticed one day that a particular person who was attending the seminar, had missed a couple of days. I asked my host, a missionary, about this brother’s absence and he reported to me that he was in prison. I asked about the details and he told me that this dear brother, a pastor of a church in Jordan, had been asked a question about Christianity on the streets of his city. He answered the question… It was a setup, and this pastor was promptly jailed for proselyting. [Postscript to the story… fortunately a person in the pastor’s church knew the King personally, made a contract, the King intervened and the pastor was released.]

This kind of thing, however, is happening all over our world, and not just in Muslim countries! It should serve as a reminder for us to support persecuted and suffering Christians – believers who live in countries where the Gospel is not welcome – regularly in our prayers!

The passage of Scripture I read this morning during “Coffee with the Lord” brought this to mind. It was Apostle Paul’s appeal (and word of reassurance) to the believers in Thessalonica (and believe me, they knew about suffering and persecution!)…

“Finally, brothers [and sisters], pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men! For not all have faith…

“But the Lord is faithful! He will establish you and guard you against the evil one… May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.” ( 2 Thessalonians 3:1–5 ESV)

Let’s do it, shall we? Let’s lift up fellow Christians who are suffering and persecuted for their faith elsewhere in the world today? Let’s pray for devoted followers of Jesus who are living in “danger zones” where the Gospel message is not welcome. Let’s do it regularly!
