In my opinion there are few things in life any more beautiful and wonderful than to see a marriage restored! In my years of pastoral ministry, I’ve seen it happen several times (and had the privilege of helping nudge it along a bit). Someone was unfaithful, there was a serious breach of covenant, a trust was broken, and separation ensued. But someone took the initiative, overtures were made, forgiveness was granted, trust was extended (and reciprocated), the relationship was rebuilt, and the marriage was healed and restored! Sometimes… yes sometimes… the union ended up stronger and richer than ever before! And when that happens I just want to exclaim “Praise the Lord!” and dance in the street!
So with that as my background, I read Isaiah 54 during “Coffee with the Lord” this morning. God’s people, Israel, had been unfaithful to Him. They were guilty of incredible spiritual adultery! They had flaunted God’s love and engaged in the worst kinds of spiritual infidelity. Separation had ensued, divorce had resulted, they reaped the sad consequences of their behavior, and judgement had come! But the Lord, their faithful spiritual husband, reached out to them…
“For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. For the Lord has called you like a wife deserted and grieved in spirit, like a wife of youth when she is cast off, says your God. For a brief moment I deserted you, but with great compassion I will gather you. In overflowing anger for a moment I hid my face from you, but with everlasting love I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord, your Redeemer… I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, and will not rebuke you. For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you… All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children. In righteousness you shall be established… No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord.” (From Isaiah 54 ESV)
So, if you’ve been unfaithful to the Lord, and once having known Him as Savior and Lord (your spiritual “soul mate”), you forgot your commitment to Him and engaged in behaviors that flaunted His love, repudiated your commitments, and trampled on His mercy… there is hope for you! He reaches out to you in love… steadfast love! He wants you back! Why not accept his forgiveness and renew your commitment to Him! He will be faithful to you… you can depend on it!
