As a disciple on this journey toward heaven… Just gotta have a “Helper!”

I remember when I was a “newbie” to computers and technology. I was almost afraid to touch the thing for fear of messing something up. Fortunately, I had a wonderful patient friend! I could call him anytime I needed help and he’d patiently help me solve problems… he’d help me understand how “the thing” worked… he’d even sit down and personally take over for awhile and fix what I’d messed up! What a blessing! He helped me overcome my fear and become proficient with computers (at least become an “informed user”). What a friend! How I appreciate him even today!

As a follower of Jesus – a “disciple” – I feel much the same way about the Holy Spirit. A Greek word used to describe Him in the New Testament is the “Parakletos” – the “Counselor” or “Helper.” He is a “Friend called alongside to help” for those who are trying to follow Jesus and please the Lord! When Jesus was preparing His disciples for His death, as well as His departure from earth back to heaven after the resurrection, this is what he said to them…

“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor [there’s that word], the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you… I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away! Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you… I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth! He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.” (from John 14:26 and 16:5-15 NIV)

Oh, how grateful I am for a “Friend” like that! I’m headed for heaven… Following Jesus is the right pathway… But I have to admit there are times I just don’t know what to do or how to do it! I battle fear that I’ll “foul up.” That’s when the Holy Spirit is such a helpful Friend! Jesus Himself sent Him to help us on our journey! He comes, calms me down, and helps me understand God’s will and way for my life. He encourages and empowers me! Praise the Lord… I need Him TODAY! Don’t you?
