One of the toughest emotions to handle is loneliness! Most of your life you’ve been surrounded by people, activity, interaction with others, the fellowship of friends, family, colleagues … and then nothing! Alone! It can happen because of the loss of a spouse, a move to a new community, retirement, a misunderstanding or a disagreement. Regardless of the reason, it’s painful! People who have experienced it will tell you it’s almost like a living death!
I guess there are willing hermits (it’s hard for me to imagine) – but I’d argue we were made for fellowship – we’re not created to be alone! If you’re experiencing loneliness, you’d probably like to see it fixed – fixed in a satisfying and fulfilling way!
Apostle Paul experienced the pain of being alone – even abandoned! In his second letter to Timothy he reported, “Demas has deserted me, since he loved the present age, and he went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatian and Titus to Dalmatia… At my first defense no one appeared in my support; instead they all deserted me.” You can almost feel the emotional pain he was experiencing! But Paul also testified, “But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, so that through me the message would be fully proclaimed for all the Gentiles to hear.” (from 2 Timothy 4:9-17)
Loneliness does not need to destroy us! It can have a constructive outcome! The fact is, the Lord NEVER abandons us – as His children we always enjoy His fellowship! “He has said, ‘I will never leave you or forsake you!'” (Hebrews 13:5) Which reminds me of the words of the refrain to an old gospel song…
“No, never alone!
No, never alone!
He promised never to leave me,
Never to leave me alone.”
