What oughta happen in “church” in the very words of Jesus…

A churchthe church - people

I believe passionately that “church” should be a place of fellowship, of worship, of the proclamation of God’s word, of discipleship and of ministry to one another… But I also believe with all of my heart that our gatherings should also be a place of prayer!  What do I base that on?  The very words of Jesus about the ancient “temple.”

Here’s what Jesus said after he drove the money changers out of the temple… “My house shall be a house of prayer!” (Luke 19:46)

Now in a very real sense, today we do not have a literal temple like the one that existed in Jesus’ day.  In fact, today, followers of Jesus, when they gather together are His temple!  The apostle, Paul, taught gentile Christians, “You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the entire structure, being joined together, grows into A HOLY TEMPLE IN THE LORD!  In Him, then, you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit!” (Ephesians 3:19-22)

So when we gather together… there are many things that are important and necessary (and some that are not!)  But one non-negotiable for me, based upon the very words of Jesus, is that our gathering should be characterized by prayer! …. He said it, “my house shall be house of prayer!”
