Facing challenges? Sing your way through it! Psalm 108

King David learned a great secret I think… When you’re facing struggles, difficulties, and even defeat… SING! OFFER THANKS TO GOD! PRAISE THE LORD! EXALT THE LORD!

This is NOT an easy thing to do! However I’ve known a few “Spiritual songbirds” who have done it – who have modeled it in the face of incredible challenges. I don’t know how to express it except this way… They “sing their way through their problems!” (and not always with the most talented voices – a “joyful NOISE” sometimes, if you please). They inspire and encourage me!

Psalm 108 in your Bible addresses this issue…

Here were King David’s challenges… “Have you not rejected us, O God? You do not go out, O God, with our armies. Oh grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! With God we shall do valiantly! It is He who will tread down our foes!” (vss. 11-13)

In the face of those difficulties – even defeats – what was David’s response?

“My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! … I will give thanks to you, O LORD, among the peoples! I will sing praises to you among the nations! For your steadfast love is great above the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth! That your beloved ones may be delivered, give salvation by your right hand and answer me!” (vss. 1-6)

The people I admire most in this regard may have deep pain in their heart, may be facing incredible challenges in their lives, my have tears running down their cheeks… but have a song in their heart – thanksgiving and praise on their lips! So here’s my resolve today… “I will bless the Lord at all times! His praise shall continually be in my mouth!” (Psalm 34:1)
