A “law of nature” – God’s nature… “Hesed!”

HesedSome things you just learn to depend upon – they seem to be inviolable laws… For example, I went to bed last night fully expecting to experience sunrise (in fact I checked Google last night and the sun rose at precisely at 6:19 a.m. CDT… I’m a morning runner). Went on a 4 mile run this morning and not once did gravity fail me so that I floated away (in fact there was an incline or two on the run that because of gravity harassed me). I expected to find fresh air to replenish my lungs and invigorate my body on my run… and sure enough it was there in good supply. Things we depend upon… Laws it you please.

There’s another one though that’s really important – a spiritual law! Over the years I’ve learned to depend on it. Just as inviolable and dependable as the others. I could take the time to document how pervasive the assurances and declarations of it are in Scripture, but that would be a project much too time and space consuming for this reflection. Just let me assure you it’s comprehensively and abundantly distributed through both Old and New Testaments! This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I was reminded of it as I read one of my favorite Psalms – Psalm 103… That dependable quality – That reliable “law” of God’s character is His “steadfast love” (His “Hesed” is the Hebrew term)!

Here’s how it’s expressed in Psalm 103…

“Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit [death], who crowns you WITH STEADFAST LOVE AND MERCY, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s… The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger AND ABOUNDING IN STEADFAST LOVE… He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, SO GREAT IS HIS STEADFAST LOVE TOWARD THOSE WHO FEAR HIM; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the LORD shows compassion to those who fear him. 14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; he flourishes like a flower of the field; the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more. BUT THE STEADFAST LOVE OF THE LORD IS FROM EVERLASTING TO EVERLASTING on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.” (From Psalm 103)

New Testament you ask… Is it a New Testament spiritual character “law” of God? Here’s what Apostle Paul declared…

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? … No! In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. I am sure that neither death not life, nor angels nor rulers, no things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor ANYTHING ELSE IN ALL CREATION, WILL BE ABLE TO SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS OUR LORD!” (From Romans 8:35-39)

Wow! In a world filled with so much bitterness and hatred, I’m certainly glad for God’s “steadfast love!”

Have you gotten some really bad news? … Here’s a prayer for you to pray!

Getting Bad NewsPart of my Bible reading today during “coffee with the Lord” included Psalm 102. As I read it this morning I jotted this in the margin of my Bible… “There’s a friend of mine who desperately needs to pray this prayer today!” The traditional title of Psalm 102 includes these words, “A prayer of one afflicted, when he/she is faint and pours out his/her complaint before the Lord.” It’s a prayer of desperation – the prayer of someone who is facing a crisis that may even result in disaster or death. If that’s your situation (or the situation of a friend of yours) I urge you to make the Psalmist’s word your own – or encourage your friend to pray them today! Let me tell you, God hears prayers like this!!

“Hear my prayer, O LORD; let my cry come to you! Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress! Incline your ear to me; answer me speedily in the day when I call! … My days are like an evening shadow; I wither away like grass. But you, O LORD, are enthroned forever; you are remembered throughout all generations. You will arise and have pity on Zion [your people]; it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come… For the LORD regards the prayer of the destitute and does not despise their prayer. Let this be recorded for a generation to come, so that a people yet to be created may praise the LORD: that he looked down from his holy height; from heaven the LORD looked at the earth, to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die, that they may declare the name of the LORD, and his praise, when peoples gather together to worship the LORD… “O my God,” I say, “take me not away in the midst of my days— you whose years endure throughout all generations!” Of old you laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you will remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will change them like a robe, and they will pass away, but you are the same, and your years have no end. The children of your servants shall dwell secure; their offspring shall be established before you.” (From Psalm 102)

Keeping things clean… A never ending task!

Keeping the House CleanMy wife is a wonderful housekeeper! She likes to have things scrupulously clean! Keeping things that way however, seems like a never ending task! There is always dusting to do, a floor to sweep or mop, and things to pick up and put away! Dust settles… if you live in a house, clutter happens! Just yesterday, Sharon was sweeping the garage floor and the neighbor was mowing his lawn next door… I heard her say to me, “Honey, please shut the garage door or all that grass and dust will come in here!” Keeping things clean and free of pollution is an ongoing task of vigilance!

And so it is with my mind and heart… That’s why David in Psalm 101 purposed…

“I will ponder the way that is blameless… I will walk with integrity of heart within my house; I will not set before my eyes anything that is worthless! I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me! A perverse heart shall be far from me; I will know nothing of evil! … I will look with favor on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; he who walks in the way that is blameless shall minister to me. No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house; no one who utters lies shall continue before my eyes.” (From Psalm 101 ESV)

Having a pure heart and clean mind requires constant vigilance! We live in a morally corrupt culture and spiritually polluted world! The dust of it all settles… the pollution is everywhere. But as much as I control – where I have a choice – I’m going to do my very best to keep my heart pure, my mind clean, and my life blameless! Help me Lord!
