Death for a Christian… Stepping out of time into eternity!

Stepping into eternity

I’ve had several respected Christian leaders and dear Christian friends die recently. I miss them! But as a Christian the Bible teaches we HAVE “eternal life!” (John 5:24; 1 John 5:13) So death for a Christian simply means stepping from our time-and-space existence here-and-now, into the full realization of our “eternal life” in His presence! It is simply a step from one dimension into another! He took the “sting” out of it for us! (1 Corinthians 15:56-57) Praise the Lord!

Good news: There is Hope for the “Backslider!”

“Backsliding” – a word that describes actions also referred to as “apostasy.” When a person “backslides” or “apostatizes” they slip back from following Jesus, trusting the Lord, and loving God, back to their old ungodly patterns of living. Backsliding can be subtle and gradual – it can also be an angry, spiteful, deliberate act. Backsliding puts someone who has followed the Lord in a very precarious position! For sure, they will experience the Heavenly Father’s loving discipline. And there are warning in Scripture regarding it that must be viewed as more than rhetorical, with actual frightening eternal consequences! (See Hebrews 6:4-6; 10:26-31; 12:5-17)

I have to admit it… backsliding scares me to death! The question is… Is there hope for the backslider?

The answer is an emphatic, resounding, “YES!”

If you know anything about the backsliding – yes, the apostasy – of Judah and Israel you might wonder if God would every forgive them! Idolatry (even more sordid and wicked than that of their pagan neighbors)! Immorality! Ungrateful complaining! The prophets, sent by God sought to call them back to repentance and covenant keeping… Their response? They killed the prophets! They abandoned the “steadfast love” of their Heavenly Father, ignored His acts of salvation and deliverance on their behalf, and rebelliously pursued their own way! God had every right to punish them – even destroy them as a nation! Backsliders – not by accident, but by choice!

Today, during “Coffee with the Lord” I read the Heavenly Father’s message through Ezekiel, the prophet, to a bunch of guilty backsliders…

He said, “I will save them from all the backslidings in which they have sinned! I will cleanse them and they shall be my people, and I will be their God!” There is hope for a prodigal nation… There is hope for prodigal sons and daughters!” (Ezekiel 37:23)

Oh, the mercy and grace of God! How often have we failed… How often have we chosen to go our own way, rather than His… How often have we behaved more like prodigals, reaping the painful consequences of our choices; rather than those who returned home to the Father in humility and repentance! (Cp. Luke 15:11-32) But here’s the good news from the New Testament that corresponds to Ezekiel’s merciful message from God in the Old Testament: “If we confess [acknowledge] our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness!” (1 John 1:9) Praise God, there is hope for the backslider!

Physical fitness is important… Spiritual fitness is more important!

Birthday 69 Run35 years ago I began running as a way to stay in shape. It has been a wise decision… Great time to pray, think, relieve stress, and solve problems. Sustained energy, weight control, and overall physical fitness are byproducts as well. I sustain a regimen of 3-5 miles – 5 or 6 days a week. Have run a bunch of 10Ks (6.2 miles), 4 marathons, and participated in 2 “Hood to Coast” relay teams (198 miles). Lord willing going to run “Capital to Coast Relay” (223 miles) with a team from Trinity Church in October. Oh yeah, I’m 69, and to celebrate my birthday this year I ran 69 miles the week of my birthday (see pic). (I’m not fast… just stubborn!) Paying attention to my physical fitness has paid off… it’s been a wise investment! … But regardless of all of that, one day I’ll die…

Thought about all of that this morning when I read the following during “Coffee with the Lord”…

“Train yourself for godliness! For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come!” (1 Timothy 4:7-8 ESV)

I run to take care of this body of mine so I am able to serve the Lord with maximum efficiency until He calls me home. My “time with Him” – my “Spiritual training” – does more! It equips me for effective service for the Lord here and now… But it does more! The benefits transcend this life and are an investment in “the life to come! I recommend BOTH… Physical and Spiritual training!! I’m going to sustain both!!
