Faith is essential… But “Faith without works is dead!”

faith-without-works-is-deadIn the class I teach at Trinity Church in Cedar Hill, Texas we’ve been studying what the great “heroes of faith” accomplished “By faith!” The Bible teaches faith is essential – even critical in our lives! It says, “Without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would draw near to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him!” (Hebrews 11:6) Faith is how we “get right with God” – you can’t earn salvation by your works! (Check out Ephesians 2:8-9) But during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I also read these words in James… “What good is it if a person says he has faith but does not have works? … So also faith by itself, if it does not produce works, is dead! … You see, faith is active along with works, and faith is completed by works! … For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” (From James 2:14-26)

So all of that provoked these analogies… Would you be willing to accept…

• An apple tree that produces no apples?
• A marriage that has no intimacy?
• A profound, life-transforming book never opened or read?
• A Rolls Royce that is never started or taken on a journey?
• A university class that is paid for but never attended?
• A house that is built but never lived in?
• A succulent meal that is prepared but never eaten?
• An expensive wardrobe that is purchased but never worn?
• Profound ideas that are thought but never expressed?
• A wonderful bed that is purchased but never slept in?

And there are many more that could be used to make the point…

I’ve got to tell you something is wrong if a person claims to have faith, but it produces no works (i.e. there is no evidence of faith in the person’s life!) Faith and it’s outcome – evidentiary works – go together! You can’t say you have one without the other! Faith produces works! Back to that Ephesian passage I quoted… After saying we are “we are saved by grace through faith – not by works,” the very next verse declares, “We are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them!” (Ephesians 2:10)

Hey, I’ve gotta tell you… I want my “faith” to produce something! I want to walk by faith! I want to live by faith! I don’t just want to claim that I have faith, I want there to be plenty of evidence for it in my life! Don’t you? Here’s my prayer… “Oh God, may what Hebrews 11 talks about not simply be ancient history! May a generation arise today, who “By faith” … receive God’s “commendation” (a BIG word in Hebrews 11)… and impact our world in positive ways and influence the coming generation to walk with God by faith!”

Oh, the power of obedience!

Oh the power of obedience!
‘The official said… “COME DOWN before my child dies.” Jesus said… GO; your son will live.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and WENT on his way. As he was going down, his servants met him and told him that his son was recovering.” John 4:49-54
Oh Lord, I need to learn to take you at your word!

“Thanksgiving Day” is just around the corner… But why not have a “Thanksgiving Month” (or more)?

Well it’s early November and Thanksgiving Day is just around the corner in the United States! I’m grateful for a “day” publicly identified as “Thanksgiving Day,” but I really think EVERY DAY ought to be a “THANKSGIVING DAY” for a Christian, don’t you?

This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I read a passage focused on thanksgiving and praise that I intend to “camp out” on for a while this month! It is King David’s song of thanksgiving and praise when the “Ark of the Covenant,” the symbolic “throne” of God’s presence among God’s people was brought back to Jerusalem. David’s song, in my opinion, provides a pattern (even the words) for a wonderful song of thanksgiving and praise for us when we do the right thing and devote ourselves to the Lord with all our heart!

I’m going to use it words to help form my thanksgiving a praise throughout the entire month of November and thus, not only celebrate a “Thanksgiving Day” on November 24, but a thanksgiving month! David’s song is found in 1 Chronicles 16:8-36 (and portions of it are also found in Psalm 105:1-15; Psalm 96; and Psalm 106). Here is the part of it that captured my attention this morning and provoked my thanksgiving and praise today…

“Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice. Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced…

“Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

“Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness… Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!” Let the sea resound, and all that is in it; let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them! Let the trees of the forest sing, let them sing for joy before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his steadfast love endures forever.

“Cry out, ‘Save us, God our Savior; gather us and deliver us… that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praise!’ Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting!

“Then all the people said ‘Amen!’ and ‘Praise the LORD!’”

(From 1 Chronicles 16:8–36 NIV)
