Beware of the Enemies of Fruitfulness!

Whenever I read Matthew 13.1-9 (the parable of the farmer scattering seed and the various soil types) and its explanation (verses 18-23) I usually pay attention to various types of soil that Jesus identified and the difference in their fruitfulness.

Today, however, during “coffee with the Lord” I was impressed BY THE ENEMIES OF SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND FRUITFULNESS JESUS IDENTIFIED… I want to be especially alert to them in my life… and avoid them and/or “deal with ‘em”!!

1) The “evil one” himself who if he has his way will find a way to snatch away the seed that is sown. (vs. 19)

2) My own lack of “deep roots” so that I allow problems or persecution keep me from bearing fruit. (vs.21)

3) The “thorns” – i.e. the worries of life and the lure of wealth and materialism that I permit that choke out spiritual growth and fruitfulness.

I want to be alert to these enemies of spiritual growth and fruitfulness in my life! I want to hear the message of the Kingdom, understand it, believe it and embrace it and produce a bountiful harvest for my Lord!!! (After all, it’s His field, isn’t it!!)

Recognizing and Getting the “Real Deal”

Recently I heard a young lady receive a wonderful compliment… Someone said, “She is a very wise shopper! She knows quality when she sees it (AND she knows when someone is trying to deceive her). She is able to consistently get a good deal!” (Just gotta say, that sounds like my daughter Shari … and her mother Sharon!! “Like mother, like daughter” I guess 😉

I wish Christians were that “sagacious” (there’s a word for the day) in spiritual things! Thought of that today as I read Apostle Paul’s warning in Romans 16.17-19 this morning…

“I urge you, brothers and sisters, to watch out for those who cause divisions and put obstacles in your way that are contrary to the teaching you have learned. Keep away from them! For such people are not serving our Lord Christ, but their own appetites. By smooth talk and flattery they deceive the minds of naïve people…I want you to be wise about what is good, and innocent about what is evil.”

So here is the deal… Don’t believe all the “marketing” you hear about spiritual things. Program your mind and heart with God’s word and depend on the Holy Spirit to work within you to produce authentic spiritual maturity and the discernment you need so that you can recognize a “spiritual scam” and reject it when you see it – as well as recognize “the real deal” and embrace it!

What an Invitation and Promise… From Who?

What a marvelous invitation (and PROMISE!) from none other than Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior!!! … “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden [burdened down], and I will give you rest! Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me,for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls! For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (from Matthew 11:28-30 ESV)
