An important reminder for the Christmas season… “Love one another!”

Christmas is for givingRead it this morning during “coffee with the Lord”… It’s an important reminder during the Christmas season (but important, nevertheless, the whole year through!)…

“For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another… We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love [one another] … By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for [one another].  But if anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother [or sister] in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?  Let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth! … And this is His commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.” (from 1 John 3:11–23 ESV)

A Christmas season reflection this morning… “The rest of the story!”

A Christmas season reflection based upon my Bible reading this morning…

God’s redemptive plan began in Heaven’s eternal counsels (It was no afterthought of God! Revelation 13:8)…

It’s earthly expression began with a little baby, born miraculously to a virgin, laying in a stable manager (Matthew 1:20-23 cp. Isaiah 7:14 ;Luke 2:1-7)…

But the final expression of God’s redemptive plan finds it’s expression in the powerful eternal worship experienced in the Heavenly throne room! (I urge you to read it all and visualize it!)…

“Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, ‘Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?’

“And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it.

“And one of the elders said to me, ‘Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals!’

“And … I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints…

“And they sang a new song, saying, ‘Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation, and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth!’ Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!’ And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying, ‘To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!’ And the four living creatures said, ‘Amen!’ and the elders fell down and worshiped!” (from Revelation 5:1–14 ESV)

And as some say, “That, my friend, is the rest of the story!”

What will matter in the end? What are you spending your time, energy and resources on now?

The endI was deeply challenged this morning during “coffee with the Lord” by the following passage:

“Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you.  For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and the pride in our achievements and possessions. These things are not from the Father, but are from this world.  This world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever!”  (from 1 John 2:15–17 the New Living Translation)

I have to admit that passage provokes some deep examination and ongoing introspection.  What do I love?  What do I desire?  What do I seek and pursue?  Is it the things of God?  Values tied to the King of Heaven?  Or are the things I seek, desire, and find fulfillment and pride in, related fundamentally to the here and now – things this passage says are passing away?  Things like fashionable clothes, expensive cars, a glamourous home in an upscale neighborhood, lots of “toys”?  Is it power, position, prestige that I seek?  Is fleshly gratification what drives my pursuits?

All of these things won’t matter a bit one moment after I die!  Will the Heavenly Auditor – the Living God – be impressed when he assesses what I have put my time, resources and energy in?  Kingdom values are what will endure!  Everything else will be burned up… “Each person’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done.” (1 Corinthians 3:13)

I was really challenged today!  Good checkup time!  Gotta tell you, I want to invest the time, resources and strength that God has given me in things that matter – that endure!
