Don’t panic… What you’re seeing are the “birth pangs” of the age

We were expecting a baby at our house… I had read the books, listened to my wife (who is a registered nurse), I’d been briefed by the doctor, and felt I knew what to expect. Some have even attended classes in order to be prepared for a birth. But when the time comes – when the contractions begin and increase in intensity – you’re still unprepared and can almost panic. Just imagine how someone might respond who had no idea what was happening to them or their spouse? They’d probably call an ambulance and take them to the emergency room! Major crisis!! What is happening anyhow?!

I think the same kind of thing can happen for people who see what is happening in our world today and have no understanding of what the Bible teaches about conditions as we approach the end of time. They’re a little like the person who might see a woman experiencing labor and had no idea of what was happening to her… (those who know what is happening respond a bit differently than those who don’t). I think that is why Jesus provided the following information to his disciples when they asked Him, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?”

This is what he told them (and notice what I’ve placed in all caps that He had to say)…

“And Jesus answered them, ‘SEE THAT NO ONE LEADS YOU ASTRAY. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. SEE THAT YOU ARE NOT ALARMED, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. ALL THESE ARE BUT THE BEGINNING OF THE BIRTH PAINS. Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But THE ONE WHO ENDURES TO THE END WILL BE SAVED. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and THEN THE END WILL COME.’“ (from Matthew 24:4–14 ESV)

For informed followers of Jesus… Concern is warranted – panic isn’t! Awareness is essential – but not gullibility that leads to deception! Being Biblically informed is critical – certainly not compromise and spiritual capitulation because of fear. The kinds of things we are seeing are “signs” – if you please “the birth pangs” of the close of this age will increase in frequency and intensity before He returns! What happens will be challenging, it will be frightening, lawlessness and deception will increase, persecution will come… Things will appear to be spinning out of control… But it is all the “birth pangs” of the coming Kingdom! God is in control – these things must happen – but the Kingdom of God will be fully realized, every enemy will be defeated, Jesus will return and “He will reign forever and ever!”

Sounding off today on the importance of systematic Bible study in the local church…

Bible Study and Prayer
I’m sounding off today on the importance of systematic Bible study in the local church! Many churches have abandoned it, believe it or not! You should see the faces of many pastors when I ask them, “When do you offer systematic Bible study in your church?” … I get blank looks and “stammering lips” 🙂 Tragic!! (No, more than that… Pathetic!!)
Yet this is what Apostle Paul declared: “All Scripture is inspired (i.e. it comes from God) and is PROFITABLE for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, that the man (or woman) of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17) And it’s not just an adult thing either… a few verses earlier he said, “From CHILDHOOD you have been acquainted with the sacred scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:15) Do we REALLY believe those Scriptures?
Here’s what I’m advocating for… Systematic Bible study (so the entirety of Scripture and sound doctrinal truth is covered); developmentally appropriate Bible study (cradle to grave); Christ centered Bible study (after all, He is the focus of everything!); Applicationally oriented or life related Bible study (dealing with the living of the Christian life every day); and Holy Spirit sensitive Bible study (after all He inspired the writers)! It needs to be led/facilitated by trained teachers/leaders and delivered in a context of small groups that allows for a high degree of fellowship and discussion. It should be offered regularly (weekly is probably preferable) and can be offered in a variety of contexts (you’re not limited to just having it in the “church house.”
I don’t care what you call it in your church (Sunday school, Bible study, School of the Bible, Growth groups, etc)… when you have it… what day of the week you have it…or where you have it… (in fact, I love a “full menu of Bible study options). Here’s my point…Just have it!!! Systematic Bible study!!!

A child of the King! I’m a child of the King! Through Jesus, my Savior, I’m a child of the King!

In my Bible reading this morning during “coffee with the Lord” I read Psalm 21. It is a Psalm attributed to King David in which he recounts what the Lord has done for him.

Now I am not a king or the son of a king… to my knowledge, there is no royal blood in a Bartel’s veins! (Sorry about that, Wes and Walt! – my brothers.) Yet as followers of Christ – as those who have put our trust in Jesus to save us and redeem us – we have been “born again” into a new relationship! We are God’s children – we are “kings and priests” (Revelation 5:9-10) and we “reign in life through Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:17)

So, as I read Psalm 21 this morning I found myself turning King David’s words into a personal prayer of gratitude for all the Lord has done for me… Here is my personal “praise paraphrase” of Psalm 21 this morning… (You may decide to use it yourself today in your devotions to express your thanksgiving and praise to the Lord)

“Oh Lord, in your strength I rejoice! In your salvation how greatly I exult! You have given me my heart’s desire and have not withheld the request of my lips. You meet me with rich blessings and have crowned me with Your grace! I asked life from You and You gave it to me – length of days extending into forever! My glory is great through Your salvation! Splendor and majesty you bestow upon me! You make me most blessed forever – You make me glad with the joy of Your presence! I trust in You and through your steadfast love I shall not be moved!”

How does the old worship song put it… “A child of the King! A child of the King! Through Jesus, my Savior, I’m a child of the King!” Just incredibly grateful today – incredibly grateful!
