I love baptism services and the reality they represent!

I love baptism services and the reality they represent!

I love water baptism services! At the church we are a part of – Trinity Church, Cedar Hill, Texas – we call them “Plunge Parties” (i.e. taking “the plunge” to follow Jesus … “all in” for Him!).
According to Romans 6:1-11, water baptism is more than simply a ceremony! It represents a reality – it is a “baptism into Christ Jesus” – a full and complete identification with His death, burial and resurrection. In a real way it is a faith-identification with Him – in some real way His death became our death to sin, His burial became our burial, and, praise the Lord, His resurrection becomes our resurrection! Here is how Romans 6:4 puts it… “We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life!”
Years ago when I baptized Bill Cypher in the Crow Wing River in Minnesota, this was his testimony… “The pastor told us today this was really a burial service! Today I can see my past – the sin I have committed – just going down that river far, far away. In a moment the pastor is going to put me down into the water of this river and the ‘old Bill’ you knew is going to be buried! Then he’s going to bring me up out of the water and by the grace of God you’re going to see a ‘new Bill’”! I remember it like it was yesterday… What a testimony! What an accurate description of what water baptism represents – and what it truly ought to be!
This morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” I read Galatians 2:20 and thought to myself, wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could get people to memorize this verse and get them to quote it and affirm it in a loud and clear voice when they came out of the waters of baptism… “I have been crucified with Christ! It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me! And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me!”
Yes, I think that would be wonderful – and an accurate and powerful affirmation!

I don’t want to act like a spoiled, selfish child with my Heavenly Father!!

We watch with disgust the behavior of a spoiled, self-centered and ungrateful child. In their mind it’s all about them. Their parents do their best to provide for them in keeping with available resources and receive in return nothing but complaints, pouting, and temper-tantrums. No appreciation! No respect! The displays of infantile behavior just leave you shaking your head and mumbling to yourself… “I tell you, if they were my child…!”
The tragedy is that sometimes adults act just like that with God – their Heavenly Father! I mean, read the sad story of continual “murmuring” by the Children of Israel after their deliverance from Egypt in your Bible! (And just listen a little bit to some professing “Christians” around you. On second thought… Have you or I ever “murmured” or complained?!)
Today, during “coffee with the Lord” I read the account of God’s miraculous and merciful provision in Deuteronomy 8 in the Bible (… and I also read the warning God gave through Moses to those who would “forget” the source of His blessing and provision).
I mean, think about it… Multitudes in the hot, dry, barren wilderness… “And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.” (Deuteronomy 8:2–4 ESV)
God fed that entire multitude miraculously in the wilderness!! Think about it! Their clothes did not wear out!! Their feet did not even swell!! Awesome!!
But I can hear it even now… “Boring! No restaurants?! This awful manna! No places to shop for new and fashionable clothes? What are you talking about?! Back to Egypt – it was better than this!
And God’s warning through Moses? “Take care lest you forget the LORD your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, 12 lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, 13 and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your God… Beware lest you say in your heart, ‘My power and the might of my hand have gotten me this wealth.” (Deuteronomy 8:11–17 ESV)

A Memorial Day reflection on those who fought for our freedoms as Americans… and spiritually!

I’m so grateful for those who fought and risked their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans! Many gave the ultimate sacrifice! We pause and remember them this Memorial Day weekend with gratitude!
In my Bible reading this Memorial Day weekend I read Galatians 2:1-10 and read about another person who defended the “freedom in Christ” that Christians enjoy…

Apostle Paul said, “Because of false brothers secretly brought in – who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery – to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you!” (Galatians 2:4-5) A bit later Paul explains what he fought for… “We know that a person is not justified (i.e. made right with God) by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified!” (Galatians 2:16) And he declared, “Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit are you now being perfected by the flesh? … Does He who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?” (Galatians 3.3-5)

Just let me say, as I am grateful for those who defended our freedoms as Americans, I am also “eternally grateful” for the spiritual leaders, who like Apostle Paul, down through the centuries and even today defend our “freedom in Christ”!!
