Inattentive…

10/3/2024 – Necessary Food Bible Reading Plan for today:  2 Kings 2:1-15; Proverbs 17:1-10; Joel 3:1-16; John 14:1-14; Hebrews 5:11-14

I’m an ol’ prof… I know the frustration of having a student sitting right there in class, lively discussion, important principles, thinking perhaps they’re “getting it” – but inattentive … And then follow up with a review question, and have that “pre-occupied” student get nothing but a blank look on their face (even asking, “could you repeat the question?” … Maddening, if you’re committed to learning – students “getting it!

That’s how God must feel sometimes!

I read about it this morning during my time of “Coffee with the Lord”…

“You have become dull of hearing!  Though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God [God’s word – the key principles of God’s word].  You need milk, not solid food!  Everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness… But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.” (from Hebrews 5:11-14 ESV)

Oh may we “tune in” and “pay attention” to what God is saying to us through His word!  In the words of my ol’ German Dad… “Son, pay attention!  I’m not talking to hear my head roar!”

A Priority Command

10/2/2024 – Necessary Food Bible Reading Plan

· 2 Kings 1:1-18

· Proverbs 16:26-33

· Joel 2:28-32

· John 13:31-38

· Hebrews 5:1-10

Jesus was preparing His disciples for His death, burial and resurrection… and ultimately His ascension back to heaven and the Father’s right hand. He spoke to them of His departure and prioritized what He wanted them to do… How He wanted them to live! This morning I read what He told them…

“Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me… where I am going you cannot come. A NEW COMMANDMENT I GIVE YOU, THAT YOU LOVE ONE ANOTHER: JUST AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, YOU ALSO ARE TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER. BY THIS ALL PEOPLE WILL KNOW THAT YOU ARE MY DISCIPLES, IF YOU HAVE LOVE FOR ONE ANOTHER!’” (From John 14:33-35 ESV)

Selfless love, sacrificial love – the kind of love He demonstrated by being willing to die for us on the cross. Love for “one another” even at personal self-sacrifice! Love within the fellowship of His followers that becomes a profound and powerful testimony to the world!

Tragically that is often NOT what the world sees displayed and expressed among those who claim to be His followers!

Consequently, I wrote this in the margin of my Bible this morning… “We’ve just GOT TO GET THIS RIGHT – we’ve got to OBEYwhat Jesus told us and DEMONSTRATE IT to others!”

Are you willing, along with me, to commit yourself to obey this priority command?

You’ve Got “A Great High Priest!”

“Necessary Food” Bible readings for today: 1 Kings 22:41-53; Proverbs 16:17-25; Joel 2:12-27; John 13:21-30; Hebrews 4:14-16

“A GREAT HIGH PRIEST!” … Just the kind of “top tier” person you need helping you on your Spiritual journey as a follower of Christ! He can help you in any temptation… He’s gone through all kinds of “gut-wrenching” trials… He’s handled the betrayal of friends… He’s navigated the “day-to-day” issues of life… He’s your personal prayer “intercessor” … He even gave up His life on the cross as the perfect sacrifice for your sin! Oh what a Savior! A GREAT HIGH PRIEST! You need no other!! I read about it this morning in the Bible: Hebrews 4:14-16…

SINCE WE HAVE A GREAT HIGH PRIEST who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need!”
