The “Transfiguration” … Blown away by Who Jesus REALLY is!

The TransfigurationWhat is referred to as “the transfiguration” in the New Testament… How do you explain what happened to Jesus on that day?

Well, let’s try this…

Sharon, my wife, went out shopping for a beautiful piece of furniture one day. She found what she was looking for and purchased it. She tried to tell me how beautiful it was. My job was to go pick it up. So I got it the truck, went to the furniture place, and they brought it out wrapped in plastic. I could see some of what it looked like through the plastic… It was nice. We got it in the truck and brought it home. Sharon kept saying, “You just wait until you really see it!” (I think she sensed that my enthusiasm was not as great as hers.) We got it in the house and began unwrapping it… we finally got it out of the wrapping and… Wow! She was right! A beautiful piece to adorn the sitting room in our house!

That’s a little like what happened at the transfiguration…

The transfiguration wasn’t something “done” to Jesus… It was the “outshining” of who He really was! The “incarnation” (Jesus coming in human flesh) was a little like the wrapping around our piece of furniture. And although it’s not a perfect analogy, Jesus was “wrapped” in humanity to protect us… the full revelation of His glory would have been more than we could have handled and lived. But it was also to help us understand what God expressed in human flesh was like. But the transfiguration? Wow!! For a few moments the disciples were allowed to see the “outshining of His glory” and hear the voice of authentication from the Heavenly Father… They got just a glimpse – a taste – of who Jesus REALLY is…

Here’s how Matthew’s gospel describes it…

“And He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and His clothes became white as light! … Peter said to Jesus, [Mark’s gospel says Peter was blown away by it all! … He didn’t know what to say (Mark 9:6) So he said…] ‘Lord, it is good that we are here! If you wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.’ [They had appeared with Jesus and were talking to Him.] While He was still speaking to them, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is My Beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!’ When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified! But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Rise and have no fear.’ And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no on but Jesus only.” (from Matthew 17:1-8)

The “Transfiguration!” … Wow, what an experience! Getting a glimpse of Who Jesus really is! And although down here on earth you may never have an experience like it… One day, in heaven, we will see Him as He really is, in all of Glory! (And that unveiling will make the “transfiguration” seem like nothing in comparison!) Until then I’m going to take the Heavenly Father’s testimony for it… “This is my Beloved Son, with Whom I am well pleased!”

Lesson learned from “Simon Peter”…

Impulsive

There is much to like about Simon Peter, one of the apostles in the Bible!  I like his forcefulness, his gregarious nature, his forthrightness, even his impulsiveness.  There are things about him that remind me of “me” and some friends I have.  I have to admit though, there are things about him that I don’t like… and again they remind me of “me” (and perhaps they remind you of “you”)…

Ever get something really right?  Perhaps you were attending a Bible study and someone asked a question for discussion and you simply “nailed” the answer… Bullseye!  The correct response just came to you mind (or heart) suddenly out of nowhere… “Epiphany!!”  Once out of your mouth everyone was nodding their head in agreement and saying, “Yeah – that’s right!  That’s good!”  Went to your head!  You wanted to stick out your chest, do “high-fives” and dance around in tight little circles in celebration!  You were “on a roll!”

Then 10 or 15 minutes later something else came up – or someone else in the Bible study gave a response you didn’t quite agree with – and you “popped off!”  You were harsh, you were rude, and you didn’t act anything like Christ or a spiritual person!  Eye-brows went up, the room got quiet, and someone was hurt or disillusioned.

Peter was like that (and I’ve been like that too!  I can still feel the inner voice of the Holy Spirit correcting me!)  Here’s the account in the Bible…

“Jesus asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say that the Son of Man is?’  And they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, other say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’  Jesus said to them, ‘But who do you say that I am?’  Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.’  And Jesus answered him, ‘Blessed are you Simon Bar-Jonah!  For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.  And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Then the very next paragraph… “From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer man things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.  And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying ‘Far be it from you, Lord!  This shall NEVER happen to you!”  But Jesus turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan!  You are a hindrance to me!  For you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of man!’” (from Matthew 16:13-23)

I’m incredibly grateful that God can speak truth to my heart by His Spirit!  And I rejoice when I get it right!  But I want to be alert to the fact that when pride enters and self-reliance rules I can get it really wrong!  I want to live in tune with the Holy Spirit and the heart of God so that I am never a “hindrance” to the Lord’s cause and find myself “setting my mind on the things of man” and not the “things of God!”  Help me Lord!  Help me keep the things, like Peter, that please you … Help me avoid the characteristics of “Peter” that disappoint you!

Heartfelt intercession on behalf of the oppressed… Psalm 10

My Bible reading today in the Psalms was like a sequel to yesterday’s post concerning the “oppressed!” I’m personally convinced that Psalm 9 and 10 should be read together! I’m going to do my best today to just let the Bible speak for itself with power! I’ll insert a comment or caption but that’s about it!

The troubling question the oppressed, and the concerned people who observe their plight, sometimes ask…

“Why, O Lord, do You stand far away? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble?”

The behavior and arrogant boast of the oppressor…

“The wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the Lord. In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek Him; all his thoughts are, ‘There is no God!’ … He says in his heart, ‘I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity!’ His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity… He says in his heart, ‘God has forgotten, He has hidden His face, He will never see it!’

The faith affirmation and prayer of the godly on behalf of the oppressed…

“Arise, O Lord! O God, lift up your hand! Forget not the afflicted! You do see! You note mischief and vexation, that You may take it into your hands! To You the helpless commits himself. You have been the helper of the fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer! Call his wickedness to account till You find none! … O Lord, You hear the desire of the afflicted! You will strengthen their heart! You will incline your ear to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more!” (From Psalm 10)

That is my prayer to the Living God this morning! I lift my voice in prayer to God this morning on behalf of the oppressed, using the inspired words of Scripture! Will you join me?
