From Bitterness to Blessing – From “Mara” back to “Naomi” – Only God can pull it off!

Today I’m so impressed by the fact that when we’re following Jesus and trusting God, as bad as things may seem to be at times, God is in control working on our behalf, and things can change because of His sovereign activity and end up better than we ever imagined!

That is the way it happened to Naomi in the little book called Ruth in the Old Testament.

The story takes place during the time of the “judges” – not a good time for the nation of Israel! There had been a famine in the land and so Naomi and her husband, Elimelek, moved for a while to Moab. There the two sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. Then things got worse! First Elimelek, Naomi’s husband died. Then a little later Noami’s two sons died. In that culture, where women were completely dependent on husbands and sons for support, this was a disaster! In desperation, Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem in Israel. Ruth, her daughter in law, insisted on going with her – Orpah decided to stay in Moab. Despondent and destitute (and perhaps a bit bitter), Naomi told her old friends in Israel, “Don’t call me Naomi (meaning pleasant), call me Mara (which means bitter)! She could not see any hope – no husband, no sons, no visible means of support, two dependent women completely at the mercy of charity.

But God was working behind the scenes although they did not know it! Ruth offers to go to the grain fields and “glean” (i.e. pick up the “leftovers” the reapers missed). She just “happened” to choose the field of Boaz, a rich landowner (and unbeknown to her a close relative of Naomi’s husband). Boaz was attracted to Ruth and showed her unusual kindness and gracious provision and protection. In that culture male relatives of husbands of women who had lost a spouse had responsibilities as “kinsmen-redeemers” (this involved both marriage, fathering children, and property rights). Naomi realized this and devised a plan to take advantage of the relationship to Boaz. Ruth cooperated with the plan, did her part, and God worked behind the scenes! The result? Boaz, the rich landowner, married Ruth and fathered children through her! The name “Mara” was forgotten and abandoned – Naomi and Ruth’s situation turned out better than they could ever have imagined or dreamed of! In fact, King David, Israel’s greatest king-leader, was a descendant of Ruth’s son! (You really should read the whole story in this little Old Testament book – only 4 chapters!)

Oh how wonderfully God works! We experience trouble and trials… we think disaster… We are tempted to “throw in the towel,” give up, and even abandon our faith (we might even blame God for everything that has happened to us and asked to be renamed, “Mara”)! But God may be at work behind the scenes in ways we could never imagine or have dreamed of! In fact, we have a wonderful assurance about this in God’s Word…

Apostle Paul assures us, “We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose… What then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? … In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us!” (From Romans 8:28-39 – My advice? Read the whole passage!)

Kindness inspires kindness! Read the story of Ruth in the Bible!

PrintAsk around and you’ll find out that these kind of people are around… People who have a reputation for kindness and generosity. I’ve got a wonderful couple in my circle of relationships in mind right now. If there is a need, they’re always trying to find a way to meet it. If someone is suffering, they’re concerned and trying to do something to help out and alleviate the pain. If someone is forgotten, neglected or lonely, they’re doing everything in their power to let them know they’re important and loved – trying to bring them into their circle of friendship. These kind of people are not usually the “upfront” type or the most visible (there are exceptions, of course). They’re usually not rich, and in most cases don’t think of themselves as the most talented (although many are very gifted). They’re just godly, good, generous, gracious and great-hearted human beings! What would the world be without them?
Interestingly, they are human catalysts for kind behavior for the rest of us! They are quiet leaders of the noblest kind in any circle of influence. They make the broader culture as well as the church better! They are whispering voices that beckon us all to worthier conduct.
An individual from my Bible reading this morning brought this to mind… Ruth, a Moabite widow who showed unusual kindness, concern, and care to her widowed and grieving mother-in-law. The story is in your Bible in the book named after her!
What caught my attention today were the words of Boaz, a rich landowner, who had heard of Ruth’s kindness and allowed (even urged) her to “glean” (gather leftover grain) in his fields. This is what the Bible says…
“At this, she [Ruth] bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him [Boaz], ‘Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me – a foreigner?’ Boaz replied, ‘I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband – how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done! May you be richly rewarded by the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!’” (Ruth 2.10-12 NIV)
A reputation for kindness gets around! Kindness begets (and catalyzes) kindness!
Today I honor those silent, godly leaders of generosity, care, concern and graciousness among us that make the world a better place to live. I want to be more like them, don’t you!
Oh, you’d like to know who came to mind in my circle of influence who is like this today? Today I’d honor Fred and Brenda Kuntz, leaders of the home group my wife Sharon and I are apart of at Trinity Church. I’d also like to honor my mother-in-law, Linda Barnett, who is now with Jesus, who perfectly fit this profile as well… miss you Mom! And there are many more I could name! I salute the ones in my life… Don’t you?

Choosing the right things to “put on” – Worth spending some time on as a Christian!

Choosing the right clothesDressing appropriately for activities you’ll be involved in is a daily issue. I know that people spend a significant amount of time and reflection on that issue. Got a banquet, wedding, or some other formal activity to attend you dress one way… Going out for dinner at a nice restaurant – you’ll dress for it… If you’re going to work you’ll dress another way (especially if a dress code is in force or a uniform is required)… Going out to mow the lawn or work on a car you’ll dress appropriately… And how about working out at the gym – there’s appropriate clothing for that too…

So what’s appropriate to “put on” as a Christian for most occasions out in the “secular world” if we are to maintain a positive testimony, and among Christians if we are to contribute to unity among fellow believers? I read about it this morning in the Bible during my time of “coffee with the Lord”…

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him!” (From Colossians 3:12–17 ESV)

Oh, as a “disciple” – a devoted, obedient follower of Jesus t– I want to dress right! I don’t want anything I wear to detract from His character, His message, or the values He advocated! Help me Lord to “put off” anything that detracts from the Gospel and help me to “put on” the things that make following the Lord very attractive to others? That your prayer as well?
