Hey, watch out for spiritual “snake oil salesmen!” Instead get connected to a good Bible-believing local church!

Snake oil salesman

Just a word of caution today to sincere, devoted followers of Jesus… Don’t fall prey to esoteric, exotic, edgy, eccentric teaching or doctrine! I always feel deep concern when I hear a Bible teacher say, “What I’m going to share with you today is different than you’ve ever heard before!” Listen, it may have a ring of excitement to it and the aura of adventure, but it may be as goofy as a five headed cat or as damaging as strychnine. Don’t buy into it! Test it against “orthodox doctrine” and “plain ol’ vanilla” Gospel truth! Don’t give your eternal welfare to someone’s “pipe dream!”

I was reminded of the concern of mine when I read what Apostle Paul urged Timothy to warn the believers in Ephesus about…

He said, “Charge certain people not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith [i.e. the plain ol’ “vanilla Gospel”]. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart, and a good conscience, and a sincere faith! Certain people, by swerving from these have wandered away into vain discussions… without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.” (From 1 Timothy 1:3-11)

Note the concerns Paul highlighted about these teachers…

Their doctrine was “different” (i.e. it did not conform to “apostolic doctrine”)

It was highly speculative – in fact, it promoted empty conjecture.

I led to “vain discussions” (that perhaps fed curiosity and entertained a desire for novelty – but it led nowhere and did not produce godliness)

Those who taught this stuff, although acting very confident and assertive, did not understand what they were talking about.

The result of their teaching did not produce a righteous life, rather it encouraged unholy living.

Hey this stuff is everywhere! It’s on “Christian television,” you’ll hear it on the radio, there’s a bunch of it available online or at the bookstore, and you can find gobs of it on “YouTube.” Here’s one voice urging you to read the Bible for yourself every day, become a part of a good, solid, Bible-believing church, and pay attention to your pastor (he may not be the most exciting person to listen to, but you’ll be able to evaluate the outcome of his life, and examine it against the clear teaching of Scripture!)

Hey, I think Apostle Paul had it right…Just say’n!

Don’t know about you, but I need a spiritual chaperone – the Holy Spirit as my accountability partner!

Accountability PartnerSometimes I joke about it, but I need a chaperone! A spiritual chaperone… someone to come alongside, keep watch over my mouth, my attitudes, what I’m inclined to do if left unaccountable. Now I’m grateful for human chaperones (often my spouse or dear friends fulfill that function), but most of all I need a spiritual chaperone – and the Holy Spirit comes alongside and fulfills that function. I’m so grateful for the role He fulfills in my life!

During “Coffee with the Lord” today in part of my Bible reading (Psalm 141) I was reminded of three areas in my life (maybe four) where I need to practice vigilance – where I need a chaperone – an accountability partner… These are areas where I’ve had challenges (and failed) in the past. (Don’t know about you, and wouldn’t make any accusations, but my hunch is that I’m not alone here.) David struggled with ‘em – and so do I. Here’s the prayer he prayed about them (and the prayer I made my own this morning…)

My mouth…

“Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!”

My heart…

“Do not let my heart incline to any evil, to busy myself with wicked deeds…”

Those I choose to associate with – my friends…

“…in company with men who work iniquity. Let me not eat of their delicacies!”

And the fourth, my enemies or adversaries

“Keep me from the trap that they have laid for me and from the snares of evildoers! Let the wicked fall into their own nets, while I pass safely by.”

(From Psalm 141)

My prayer today – Oh Lord help me with these things! I need a Helper – the Holy Spirit – my spiritual chaperone and accountability partner!

Jesus, what did you mean when you said, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation!”

Jesus praying in the gardenSometimes we come across something that I call “purposeful ambiguity” in the Bible. I believe I experienced it in my Bible reading this morning…

The Bible says, “Jesus came out and went, as was His custom to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed Him. And when He came to the place, He said to them, ‘Pray that you may not enter into temptation.’ And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed…

Jesus, in that prayer session, experienced an intense testing of His resolve to fulfill His Father’s redemptive purpose and personally become our “sin sacrifice” through His death on the cross! But He submitted to the Father’s redemptive will and prayed, “Father, if you are willing remove this cup from me – Nevertheless, not my will, but Your’s be done!”

Then the Bible goes on to say, “When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, and He said to them, ‘Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation!” (From Luke 22:39 -46 ESV)

The question that came to my mind today is what exactly did Jesus mean when twice He told his disciples, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation!”? Did He mean that their prayer would shield and protect them from temptation? Or did He mean that their practice of prayer would strengthen them to resist and overcome temptation when it came their way?

I personally believe, this is a case of “purposeful ambiguity” in the Bible. The answer to the questions I’ve posed is probably both are possible – both are true – both were in His mind!

In fact, my personal experience is that prayer does both things…

I’ve prayed “lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil!” (from the “Lord’s Prayer” – Matthew 6:13) and had the Lord actually shield me from temptation and He kept it from coming my way! (In fact, an honest admission goes here – There have been a few times I actually entertained and wished a temptation would come my way and it didn’t! The Lord actually shielded and protected me! Know what I mean?)

But on the other hand, I know that prayer strengthens, buttresses, and hardens our resolve and Spiritual strength to resist temptation! When it comes, if our soul has been strengthened and nourished with prayer, we are better equipped to resist temptation and the Tempter (Satan)!

So what’s my recommendation (and I believe also the Lord’s)… “PRAY that you may not enter into temptation!” I’m going to do it! I’m going to do it daily! I’m going to trust God to both shield me from temptation and strengthen me to resist it when it comes! I’m going to use Him as my example (not the disciples)! I believe He will do it for me!
