Learning a faith-obedience lesson from a single mom during a terrible drought…

the-widow-of-zeraphath

Ever get caught in a situation (not of your own making) that was absolutely frightening and foreboding?  Danger (even death) were staring you right in the face!  You didn’t know whether or not you’d survive or perish.  As a Christian you just had to trust God and His promises to protect and provide!

The big question in a situation like that… Does that work?

Well it does if your believe the Bible is factually true and reliable!  There’s a case study in this kind of thing in 1 Kings 17 in your Bible:

Elijah, at the direction of God, had prophesied a terrible drought as judgment upon King Ahab and Israel’s sin:  “There shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”

Good people – righteous, God-fearing people, suffered along with the ungodly during the crisis that followed!  God instructed the prophet, Elijah, to go to the village of Zarephath, and told him, “Behold, I have commanded a widow there to feed you.”

Elijah obeyed, and as he entered the village… (and here we give you the story right out of the Bible…)  “a widow was there gathering sticks. Elijah called to her and asked, ‘Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?’  As she was going to get it, he called out to her, ‘And bring me, please, a piece of bread.  ‘As surely as the Lord your God lives,’ she replied, ‘I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and then die.’

And then the audacious request of Elijah!  “Elijah said to her, ‘Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.  For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”

Wow!!  Would you have done it?  Would you have acted and been obedient on just the prophet’s word given the desperate situation the widow and her son were facing?  [Notice: Somehow she must have experienced an inner witness of the Holy Spirit… earlier God had told Elijah, “I have COMMANDED a widow there to feed you.”]   “So she went away and did as Elijah had told her… [And the result?]  SO THERE WAS FOOD EVERY DAY FOR ELIJAH AND FOR THE WOMAN AND HER FAMILY.  FOR THE JAR OF FLOUR WAS NOT USED UP AND THE JUG OF OIL DID NOT RUN DRY, IN KEEPING WITH THE WORD OF THE LORD SPOKEN BY ELIJAH.”  (From 1 Kings 17:10–16)

Oh Lord, help me learn from the little unnamed widow – a single mom – in this story!  When I face frightening circumstances – desperate circumstances – to trust you, to depend on and obey your word, to believe your promises!  Help me to trust you to protect and provide!  Sometime I going to need the truth this story teaches… I just know it!

“Oh Lord reveal Yourself to my family and friends who don’t know you personally yet!”

Perhaps your heart is heavy and concern fills your mind every day over family and friends who seem far from the Lord. To you it seems their daily lives are lived in large part without any regard for the Lord or concern for His will. You long to see them experience “new birth,” put their trust in Jesus for salvation, and enjoy an intimate relationship with their Heavenly Father!

Perhaps you’ve tried to talk to them about their relationship to the Lord without success. In fact, they’ve let you know, “Don’t go there! I’m not ready for that conversation!” At this point at least it seems that the door is shut… They don’t want you, in their words, “shoving ‘religion’ down their throat!” You grieve! You pray for them every day!

Well it might encourage you to read a couple of stories in the Bible! I was reminded of them this morning during my time of “coffee with the Lord” and my “Prayer Run” as I lifted loved ones who aren’t serving the Lord to Him in intercessory prayer…

Daniel 4… God found a way to communicate clearly His reality to pagan King Nebuchadnezzar! He used a dream and an unpleasant (even frightening) circumstance to make Himself real! When it was all over Nebuchadnezzar wrote these words in an open letter “to all peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth.”

“It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has done for me! How great are His signs! How mighty His wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and His dominion endures from generation to generation… Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of Heaven, for all His works are right and His ways are just; and those who walk in pride He is able to humble!”

Here’s another one – the conversion of Apostle Paul: Here is his own testimony before King Agrippa…

“I was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the Lord’s people in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. I was so obsessed with persecuting them that I even hunted them down in foreign cities. On one of these journeys I was going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. About noon, King Agrippa, as I was on the road, I saw a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, blazing around me and my companions. We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice saying to me in Aramaic, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’ Then I asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,’ the Lord replied. ‘Now get up and stand on your feet. I have appeared to you to appoint you as a servant and as a witness of what you have seen and will see of me. I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles. I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven. First to those in Damascus, then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles, I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.” (From Acts 26:9–23)

So here’s the deal! I’m praying for my friends and family who don’t know the Lord yet and aren’t serving Him. I’m asking Him to reveal Himself to them – His love, His grace, His character, and His concern for them! I want them to hear and respond to the Gospel! He knows just how to do it – I don’t! I’ll do my best to cooperate with Him and do my part as He works in their lives and leads me. I’m convinced “He’s a good, good Father – that’s who He is” and I believe He will reveal Himself to them in answer to my prayer!

What I expect this morning in “Church”

In a little while, I’ll be heading off to meet with fellow Christians for worship, Bible study, an encouraging message from God’s word, and fellowship. I’ve already enjoyed a quality time of personal devotions that I call “coffee with the Lord” – a time I set aside daily for Bible reading, reflection, prayer and worship. As important as that “personal time” is, however, it is no substitute for what I gain from the corporate experience of gathering with fellow Christians each week – Christians call it “church!”

From a Biblical perspective, “church” is NEVER a building – it is ALWAYS the corporate experience of gathering with fellow Christians – the “church” is about people, not buildings! Some will gather on this “Lord’s Day” in various “houses of worship” (some very nice and some very modest) – some will not gather in a formal “house of worship” at all, but in private homes (“house churches”) – for others it may be a garage, a café, or a public building of some sort where they meet. But Christ has promised, “Wherever two or three are gathered in my Name, there am I among them!” (Matthew 18:20) That’s what makes it “church!”

This morning, while I was having “coffee with the Lord” and preparing my heart for “church” (which comes later) I read a wonderful verse in the little epistle, Philemon, in my Bible. It was so rich with significance I looked it up in the Good News Bible which I believe captures it implications:

“My prayer is that our fellowship with you as believers will bring about a deeper understanding of every blessing which we have in our life in union with Christ.” (Philemon 6 GNB)

That was Apostle Paul’s prayer and expectation for “church” – And I made it my prayer and expectation as well this Sunday morning!
